Highway 116 (AR 116, Ark. 116, and Hwy. 116) is a designation for two east–west state highways in Logan County. A northern route of runs east from Highway 23 encircling the northeastern quadrant of Booneville and ending at Highway 10. A second route of begins at Highway 23 and runs east to the Booneville Human Development Center. Route description Booneville Highway 116 begins at Highway 23 north of Booneville near Lake Booneville. The route runs east before turning south and terminating at Highway 10. The average daily traffic counts from the Arkansas State Highway and Transportation Department (AHTD) for 2010 show that about 600 vehicles per day (VPD) use Highway 116. Booneville is a city in Logan County, Arkansas, United States and the county seat of its southern district. Located in the Arkansas River Valley between the Ouachita and Ozark Mountains, the city is one of the oldest in western Arkansas. The city's economy was first based upon the railroad and Arkansas State Tuberculosis Sanatorium. It has developed a diverse economy of small businesses and light industry. Booneville's population was 3,990 at the 2010 census. Booneville supports a community center, a senior-citizens center, a community hospital, a municipal airport, and new school facilities. Logan County (formerly Sarber County) is a county located in the U.S. state of Arkansas. As of the 2010 census, the population was 22,353. Its two county seats are Booneville and Paris. History The Arkansas General Assembly defined the state's 64th county on March 22, 1871, incorporating parts of Scott, Yell, and Pope counties (later adding part of Franklin County). They named it Sarber County for John Newton Sarber (1837–1905), an attorney and Republican state senator from Yell County. He had introduced the resolution to organize the county. Born and reared in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, he had moved with his widowed father and family to Kansas in 1855. Sarber became influential in the Arkansas legislature, introducing bills to establish a public school system for the first time, and what developed as the University of Arkansas. Arkansas Highway 23 is a north–south state highway in north Arkansas. The route runs from US 71 near Elm Park north to the Missouri state line through Ozark and Eureka Springs. Between AR 16 at Brashears and Interstate 40 north of Ozark (), Highway 23 winds through the Ozark National Forest and is designated as the Pig Trail Scenic Byway due to its steep hills and hairpin turns. The route has a strong connection with the University of Arkansas Razorbacks, connecting fans in Central Arkansas with the Northwest Arkansas area. Arkansas Highway 10 is an east–west state highway in West Arkansas. The route runs from Oklahoma State Highway 120 near Hackett east to Interstate 30 in Little Rock, the state's capitol. The highway serves both the Fort Smith metropolitan area and the Little Rock – North Little Rock – Conway metropolitan area. Aside from Little Rock in Pulaski County, the highway also passes through county seats in four other Arkansas counties — Greenwood, Sebastian County; Booneville, Logan County; Danville, Yell County; and Perryville, Perry County. Mount Magazine, Arkansas's highest point, lies just to the north of the highway, as does the adjoining Mount Magazine State Park. The Arkansas Department of Transportation (ArDOT), formerly the Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department, is a government department in the U.S. state of Arkansas. Arkansas Tuberculosis Sanatorium Historic District
The Arkansas Tuberculosis Sanatorium Historic District is a United States Historic District south of Booneville, Arkansas that was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in October 2006. The district encompasses the former relocation center for Arkansans diagnosed with tuberculosis and an administration building built in the Art Deco style in 1909. It is one of the largest and best-preserved surviving complexes of its type in the country. History The sanatorium was the relocation center for all white Arkansans with tuberculosis. By the time the facility was closed in 1973, it had treated over 70,000 patients. The main hospital, named the Nyberg Building after Leo E. Nyberg, a former sanatorium patient and state legislator who sponsored the bill funding the construction, was completed in 1941.
