Highway 136 (AR 136, Ark. 136, Hwy. 136) is an east–west state highway in northeast Arkansas. The route of runs from Highway 135 near Rivervale east across Highway 140 to Highway 77 near Etowah. Route description Highway 136 begins at Highway 135 east of Rivervale. The route runs east to concur northeasterly with Highway 140. The route continues alone to Etowah, where it passes the Garden Point Cemetery and Edward Samuel Wildy Barn, both listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Carroll's Corner, Arkansas
P. J. Carroll & Company Limited, often called Carroll's, is an Irish manufacturing company of tobacco. Having been established in 1824, P.J. Carroll is the oldest tobacco manufacturer in the country, and currently a subsidiary of British American Tobacco. Its cigarette brands were among the best selling in Ireland in the twentieth century. Its factory was for decades the largest employer in Dundalk. History Patrick James Carroll (b. 1803) completed his apprenticeship as a tobacconist in 1824 and opened a shop in Dundalk, later also manufacturing cigars. He moved to Liverpool in England in the 1850s. His son Vincent Stannus Carroll expanded the firm in the later 19th century. His son James Marmion Carroll moved to a house outside Dundalk. Poinsett County is a county located in the U.S. state of Arkansas. As of the 2010 census, the population was 24,583. The county seat is Harrisburg. Poinsett County is included in the Jonesboro–Paragould Combined Statistical Area. History Poinsett County was formed on February 28, 1838, and named for Joel Roberts Poinsett, U.S. Secretary of War. County business was initially conducted in the county judge's home until first court was held in Bolivar, upon completion of a courthouse in 1839. County government was moved in 1859 to Harrisburg, a more central locale designated as the new county seat. Poinsett County acquired its current boundaries in the years following this change, as portions were assigned to newly organized counties. The following is a list of state highways in Arkansas. The state does not use a numbering convention. Generally the two-digit odd numbered highways run north–south with a few exceptions; and even-numbered two-digit state highways run east–west with a few exceptions. Arkansas has long had a stigma of poor roads, dating from the "Arkansas Roads Scandal" playing a prominent role in state politics through the 1920s and 1930s, periodic allegations of corruption, waste, and fraud, and a long-running struggle to adequately fund the operation, maintenance and expansion of a large highway system serving a rural state. The state has received the designation of "worst roads in America" from several publications throughout the 1990s and into the 2000s, with Interstate 30 and Interstate 40 often ranking particularly poorly among truckers. Highway 135 (AR 135, Ark. 135, Hwy. 135) is a north–south state highway in northeast Arkansas. The route of runs from Interstate 555 (I-555) near Tyronza north through Paragould to US 62. Route description AR 135 begins at Interstate 555 south of Tyronza and runs north to intersect AR 118 before meeting AR 14/ AR 140 in Lepanto. The route continues north to Caraway, where it meets concurs with AR 158. The concurrency ends in Black Oak, when AR 135 begins to arrow west with AR 18. The route leaves AR 18 in Lake City, after which it angles north to Paragould. In Paragould, AR 135 meets US 412 and US 49/ AR 1 before exiting town headed north. Highway 140 (AR 140, Ark. 140, and Hwy. 140) is a designation for two east–west state highways in the Upper Arkansas Delta. One route of begins at US Highway 63 Business (US 63B)/ Highway 14 in Marked Tree and runs east to US 61 in Osceola. A second segment of in east Osceola runs from US 61 to Pearl Street and Quinn Avenue. Both routes are maintained by the Arkansas State Highway and Transportation Department (AHTD). Highway 77 (AR 77, Ark. 77, and Hwy. 77) is a north–south state highway in Northeast Arkansas. The route of runs from US Highway 70 (US 70) in West Memphis north through small towns and agricultural areas of the Arkansas Delta to the Missouri state line. It is generally a low-traffic road except in West Memphis. Created during the 1926 Arkansas state highway numbering, the route was extended in the 1950s and 1960s, including along a former alignment of US 61. AR 77 does not have any spur or business routes. Etowah, Arkansas
Etowah is a town in Mississippi County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 254 at the 2020 census, down from 351 in 2010. History and government Etowah began as a settlement established for workers of the Chapman and Dewey Lumber Company in the 1890s. When a post office was established in 1902, the name "Etowah" was chosen after several other names had been rejected by the postal service. Etowah incorporated as a town in 1996. In recent years few have run against Mayor McCullom (Mayor Bo), who usually runs unopposed. Similarly, the seven City Council members are usually re-elected. A concurrency in a road network is an instance of one physical roadway bearing two or more different route numbers. When two roadways share the same right-of-way, it is sometimes called a common section or commons. Other terminology for a concurrency includes overlap, coincidence, duplex (two concurrent routes), triplex (three concurrent routes), multiplex (any number of concurrent routes), dual routing or triple routing. Concurrent numbering can become very common in jurisdictions that allow it. Garden Point Cemetery
The Garden Point Cemetery is a historic cemetery on Arkansas Highway 140 in southern Etowah, Arkansas. It is the city's oldest cemetery, and where many of its earliest citizens are buried. The cemetery occupies a ridge of land south of the city center, which is one of the highest areas overlooking the Mississippi River plains. Although the oldest known graves date to 1890, the oldest marked grave is dated 1903, and is for Reddrick Henry Jackson, one of Etowah's founders. The cemetery, now owned by the city, has more than 2000 burials. The cemetery was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2006. Edward Samuel Wildy Barn
The Edward Samuel Wildy Barn is a historic barn at 1198 South Arkansas Highway 136 in rural Etowah, Arkansas. Built in 1915, it is a well-preserved example of a gambrel-roofed barn in Etowah, representative of agricultural practices of the early 20th century in Mississippi County. It is a rectangular structure, with a central component that is gambrel-roofed, and shed-roofed wings on the sides. The complex it stands in, built in 1915 by Edward Samuel Wildy, also includes from that period a windmill, silo, and concrete pads and troughs. The barn was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2004.
