Arion Distinctus
''Arion distinctus'' is a species of air-breathing land slug in the family Arionidae, sometimes known as the roundback slugs. It is a terrestrial pulmonate gastropod mollusc. Several vernacular names exist, but it is unclear if they are much in use: brown soil slug, common garden slug, darkface arion, Mabille's orange-soled slug, April slug. Taxonomic background '' Arion hortensis'' was described by Férussac in 1819. Only in the 1970s did the amateur malacologist Stella Davies discover that in Britain that name had been applied to three distinct species. Later the name ''Arion distinctus'' was used for the one of these species that Davies had provisionally called "form A". Mabille's original 1868 description of ''A. distinctus'' included details (coloration, date of collection) that tended to indicate this species rather than ''Arion hortensis'' s.s. Jules François Mabille (Tours, 5 December 1831 − 18 January 1904) was a French malacologist, biologist and zoologist who in many trips around the world discovered and studied many species of mollusc. In 1882−83 Mabille participated in the French scientific expedition to Cape Horn and the South Seas, with his fellow malacologist Alphonse Trémeau de Rochebrune Alphonse Amédée Trémeau de Rochebrune was a French botanist, malacologist and a zoologist. Arion Circumscriptus
''Arion circumscriptus'', common name brown-banded arion, is a species of air-breathing land slug, a terrestrial pulmonate gastropod mollusk in the family Arionidae. It is commonest in woodland, occurring across most of Europe, except for more southern regions, and is also widespread in North America. It has been argued that ''A. circumscriptus'' is best considered a colour morph of ''Arion fasciatus''. Taxonomy The subgenus ''Carinarion'' Hesse, 1926 contains three species—'' Arion fasciatus'', ''Arion silvaticus'' and ''Arion circumscriptus''—distinguished on the basis of small differences in pigmentation and in proportions of their genital anatomy. ''Arion fuscus'', also known as the "dusky arion", is a species of small air-breathing land slug, a terrestrial pulmonate gastropod mollusk in the family Arionidae, the roundback slugs. ''Arion subfuscus'' (Draparnaud, 1805) is considered by some authors to be a partial synonym for ''Arion fuscus''. ''Arion subfuscus'' (Draparnaud, 1805) and ''A. fuscus'' (Müller, 1774) have very similar morphology and have overlapping distributional ranges in northwestern Europe.
