Arilje
Arilje ( sr-cyr, Ариље, ) is a town and municipality located in the Zlatibor District of southwestern Serbia. The population of the town is 6,763, while the municipality has 18,792 inhabitants. The town is famous for having large raspberry plantations in which many locals are employed. Geography The municipality of Arilje is located in western Serbia in the river basins of the clear mountain rivers of the Rzav and Moravica. It has a hilly-mountainous area at an altitude of 330 to 1,382 meters. The municipality seat is situated at the confluence of the Rzav and Moravica rivers in a region described by many as a heavenly earth. There is numerous material evidence of continuous life in this region, from the prehistoric to contemporary time. There are many interesting facts associated to this place as well. The residents of Thessaly found refuge here in the 11th century, and with great trust they laid the relics of their St. Achileus into the existing temple. The town was named ... Saint Achillius Church (Serbia)
The Church of St. Achillius ( sr, Црква Cветог Ахилија, Crkva Svetog Ahilija) or the Arilje Monastery ( sr, Mанастир Aриље, Manastir Arilje) is a Serbian Orthodox church in Arilje, western Serbia. It is dedicated to Saint Achillius of Larissa, a fighter against Arianism and participant of the First Council of Nicaea in 325. The church was built in 1296 by Serbian King Stefan Dragutin of the Nemanjić dynasty and is located in the center of town, on the elevated plateau above the large river valley and the river Moravica and Big Rzav, and represents the most dominant object in the Arilje region. Dragutin Nemanjić
Stefan Dragutin ( sr-cyr, Стефан Драгутин, hu, Dragutin István; 1244 – 12 March 1316) was King of Serbia from 1276 to 1282. From 1282, he ruled a separate kingdom which included northern Serbia, and (from 1284) the neighboring Hungarian banates (or border provinces), for which he was unofficially styled "King of Syrmia". He was the eldest son of King Stefan Uroš I of Serbia and Queen Helen. Dragutin married Catherine of Hungary, likely after his father concluded a peace treaty with her grandfather, Béla IV of Hungary, in 1268. By 1271, he received the title of "young king" in recognition of his right to succeed his father. He rebelled against his father, and with Hungarian assistance, forced him to abdicate in 1276. Dragutin abandoned Uroš I's centralizing policy and ceded large territories to his mother in appanage. Rzav (Golija)
The Rzav ( sr-cyr, Рзав) is a river in southwestern Serbia. The 62 km long left tributary to the Golijska Moravica river, it originates from two headstreams, the Veliki Rzav and the Mali Rzav. The river is sometimes referred to as the Golijski Rzav (Serbian Cyrillic: Голијски Рзав, "Rzav of Golija") to distinguish it from another Rzav river in Serbia, the Rzav of Zlatibor. Mali Rzav The Mali Rzav ( sr-cyr, Мали Рзав, "Little Rzav") is the Rzav's shorter headstream. It originates from the northern slopes of the Mučanj mountain, near the village of Katići. Originally the river flows to the west, but at the village of Bjeluša it makes a large elbow turn, parallel to the even larger elbow turn of the Veliki Rzav. Golijska Moravica
The Golijska Moravica or simply Moravica ( sr-Cyrl, Голијска Моравица or ) is a river in western Serbia. With a length of 98 km, it is the longer headstream of the West Morava (the name it takes at its confluence with the Đetinja), and thus, of the Great Morava. Its name, Moravica, means "little Morava" in Serbian, and it also gives its name to the surrounding region and the modern Moravica District of Serbia. Stari Vlah The Golijska Moravica originates from the western slopes of the Golija mountain and flows straight to the north, between the Golija and Javor mountains, through the Stari Vlah region. Even though the area in the lower course is sparsely populated, there are many hamlets on the river, characteristically organized in clusters. Sava Nemanjić
Saint Sava ( sr, Свети Сава, Sveti Sava, ; Old Church Slavonic: ; gr, Άγιος Σάββας; 1169 or 1174 – 14 January 1236), known as the Enlightener, was a Serbian prince and Orthodox monk, the first Archbishop of the autocephalous Serbian Church, the founder of Serbian law, and a diplomat.
