Aria (Belgian Comic)
Aria is a Belgian comic book series written and drawn by Michel Weyland, with colours by Nadine Weyland. It debuted in ''Tintin'' in August 1979. Synopsis Aria is an unbound woman warrior, living in an unknown medieval era which is most likely situated in a parallel universe, or in the future. Technology and magic coexist, while the powers of the spiritual compete with those acquired by humans. Aria fights for the weak and voiceless, oppressed by the powerholders. She eventually overcomes all injustices and hostility, not in the least because of her good looks or fearlessness. In 2019, publisher Dupuis decided to discontinue several long-running comic series, including Aria. Michel Weyland
Michel Weyland (born 19 August 1947, in Brussels) is a Belgian artist, writer and cartoonist. Biography Born in Ixelles, Weyland studied arts at the Institut Saint-Luc in Brussels. In 1969, during his final year of study, he published in the ''Journal de Tintin'' a science fiction series entitled Stereo-land, which however he stopped after some thirty pages. From that year to 1979, he worked as a retoucher in a large printer plant in Brussels. In 1974, he made a few cartoons for the Belgian weekly ''Pourquoi pas?''. In August 1979, he created for the ''Journal de Tintin'' the character of Aria; the first album of this heroic fantasy series would be published in 1982 by Lombard. In September 1979, he left the photographic work to devote himself exclusively to comics. After the creation of Aria, Weyland worked in this series, the few exceptions including the science fiction fairytale ''Yvanaëlle, la Dame de Mordorez'', published in 1988. Fantasy comics have been around as long as Comic book, comics. The classification "fantasy comics" broadly encompasses illustrated books set in an other-worldly universe or involving elements or actors outside our reality. Éditions Dupuis S.A. () is a Belgian publisher of comic albums and magazines. Based in Marcinelle near Charleroi, Dupuis was founded in 1922 by Jean Dupuis, and is mostly famous for its comic albums and magazines. It is originally a French language publisher, but publishes many editions both in French and Dutch. Other language editions are mostly licensed to other publishers. Dupuis was for a long time a family business but was sold in the early 1980s and has since changed ownership a few times. Le Lombard
''Le Lombard'', known as ''Les Éditions du Lombard'' until 1989, is a Belgian comic book publisher established in 1946 when ''Tintin'' magazine was launched. Le Lombard is now part of Média-Participations, alongside publishers Dargaud and Dupuis, with each entity maintaining its editorial independence. History Les Éditions du Lombard was established by Raymond Leblanc and his partners in 1946. Wanting to create an illustrated youth magazine, they decided that the already well-known ''Tintin'' would be the perfect hero. Business partner André Sinave went to see Tintin creator Hergé to propose creating the magazine. Hergé, who had worked for ''Le Soir'' during the war, was being prosecuted for having collaborated with the Germans and did not have a publisher at the time. After consulting with his friend Edgar Pierre Jacobs, Hergé agreed. The first issue of ''Tintin'' magazine was published on 26 September 1946.
