The Argentine PGA Championship is a golf tournament played in Argentina since 1920. It was generally supported by the leading Argentine golfers and its list of champions includes Eduardo Romero (8 times), José Jurado (7 times), Vicente Fernández (5 times), José Cóceres (twice) and Ángel Cabrera. However, the record holder is former British Open champion Roberto De Vicenzo Roberto De Vicenzo (14 April 1923 – 1 June 2017) was a professional golfer from Argentina. Golf
Golf is a club-and-ball sport in which players use various clubs to hit balls into a series of holes on a course in as few strokes as possible. Sebastián Fernández (golfer)
Sebastián Fernández (born 8 September 1973) is an Argentine professional golfer. Fernández was born in Buenos Aires. He worked as a caddie in Buenos Aires, before turning professional in 1991. He won the Argentine Tour Order of Merit in 2000. He won three Argentine PGA Championships, in 1991, 2001 and 2005, the first as an 18-year-old, and also came second in 2003. Fernández competed on the Challenge Tour from 2003 to 2007, winning one tournament, the Costa Rica Open in 2003, and finishing second in the Skandia PGA Open (Sweden) in 2003, the Costa Rica Open in 2005 and the Challenge of Ireland in 2006. Seventh place on the Challenge Tour Order of Merit in 2003 enabled Fernández to play on the European Tour the following year. He managed a best finish of 16th position in the BMW International Open, and just missed out on retaining his tour card, ending the season 136th on the money list. Adan Sowa
Adan Domingo Sowa (born 15 August 1954) is an Argentine professional golfer. Sowa was born in Buenos Aires, and turned professional in 1973. He won the Argentine Open twice, in 1978 and 1983, and led the Argentine Professional Rankings on two occasions, in 1978 and 1982. He was second in the 1985 Argentine Open and the 1982 Argentine PGA Championship. In 1982, Sowa was second in the Jujuy Open on the Argentine Professional Tour, but claimed the first prize cheque because the overall winner was amateur, Luis Carbonetti. Sowa played on the European Tour from 1978 to 1986, with a best finish of tied 6th in the Italian Open in 1986, on his way to 69th place on the Order of Merit. He played in the British Open three times, in 1978, 1979 and 1986. Sowa currently competes on the European Seniors Tour. Fidel De Luca
Fidel de Luca (29 April 1922 – 6 June 2007) was an Argentine professional golfer. Born in San Isidro, Buenos Aires, he worked as a caddie in Buenos Aires, before turning professional in 1948. De Luca won the Argentine Professional Ranking nine times, but only competed in three major championships, appearing twice in the British Open, in 1958 and 1960, and once in the Masters Tournament in 1962. In 1958, on the European circuit, he won the German Open, and finished fourth in French Open. De Luca represented Argentina on nine occasions in the World Cup, with a best finish of second place in partnership with Roberto De Vicenzo in the 1962 edition, which was held on home soil at the Jockey Club in Buenos Aires. Florentino Molina (born 30 December 1938) is an Argentine professional golfer. Molina was born in Río Cuarto, Córdoba. He turned pro in 1960. He won the Argentine Open five times and the Argentine Professional Rankings four times. He played on the PGA Tour from 1975 to 1980 and the European Tour in 1981. He was second in French Open in 1970 and 4th in the B.C. Open in 1977. He was second in Argentine Open in 1962 and the Brazil Open in 1970. Molina played in the British Open five times (1970, 1971, 1974, 1978 and 1981), and once in the U.S. Open (1977), when he was one of seven players tied for the lead after the first round. Luis Carbonetti
Luis Guillermo Carbonetti (born 23 April 1953) is an Argentine professional golfer. He is the brother of golfer Horacio Carbonetti. Carbonetti was born in Río Cuarto, Córdoba. As an amateur, he played on five Eisenhower Trophy teams and won the individual title twice (1982 and 1984). He turned pro in 1984. Carbonetti won the Argentine Tour Order of Merit in 1985 and Cordoba Tour Order of Merit 2002. He also played on the European Tour in the 1980s and 1990s. His best finishes on tour were a pair of T-7 in 1989 at the Lancia Italian Open and Torras Monte Carlo Open. César Omar Monasterio (born 28 November 1963) is an Argentine professional golfer. Monasterio was born in Tucumán. He turned professional in 1990. Since 2003 Monasterio has played extensively in Europe on the European Tour and its development tour, the Challenge Tour. Armando Saavedra
Armando Saavedra (born 27 September 1954) is an Argentine professional golfer. Born in Chile, Saavedra worked as a caddie in Buenos Aires, before turning professional in 1974. Saavedra won the Argentine Professional Ranking in 1979, but only competed in four major championships, in the British Open in 1979, 1980, 1985 and 1990. He competed on the European Tour from 1978 to 1979 and from 1985 to 1992 and obtained three top ten finishes: T8 at the Scandinavian Enterprise Open in 1979, T5 at the Peugeot Open de France in 1986 and 7th at the Open Renault de Baleares in 1990. He competed on the Canadian Tour in 1979 and his best finish was third in the Canadian PGA Championship. In 1985, Saavedra lost in a playoff at the Kentab Open (Sweden). Rubén Alvarez (30 May 1961 – 9 November 2014) was an Argentine professional golfer. Alvarez was born in Pilar, Buenos Aires. He worked as a caddie in Buenos Aires, before turning professional in 1986. Alvarez won the Argentine Qualifying School in 1986, and went on to win the Argentine Tour Ranking (Order of Merit) in 1991, but he only competed once in a major championships, the British Open in 1994. He competed on the Challenge Tour in 1991, with a best of two second-place finishes, the Ramlösa Open and the Jede Hot Cup, both held in Sweden. He competed on the European Tour from 1993 to 1995, and had two top ten finishes, coming 9th in both the 1994 Tenerife Open and the 1995 Madeira Island Open.
