Arellano Chiefs Basketball
The Arellano Chiefs basketball program represents Arellano University in men's basketball as a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (Philippines) (NCAA). Originally the Arellano Flaming Arrows, the Arellano Chiefs have previously played in the National Capital Region Athletic Association (NCRAA), winning two consecutive championships from 2007 and 2008. The Chiefs transferred to the NCAA in 2010, and have qualified to two Finals appearances, in 2014 and 2016, losing each time to the defending champions San Beda Red Lions. History Beginnings The Arellano Flaming Arrows won the Basketball Association of the Philippines-organized National Student's Championship in the 1970s. Arellano University (AU) is a private, coeducational, nonsectarian university located in Manila, the Philippines. It was founded in 1938 as a law school by Florentino Cayco Sr., the first Filipino Undersecretary of Public Instruction. The university was named after Cayetano Arellano, the first Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the Philippines. NCAA Season 97 Seniors' Basketball Tournament
The NCAA Season 97 seniors' basketball tournament was the basketball tournaments of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (Philippines) for its 2021–22 season. This was the first tournament since the COVID-19 pandemic in the Philippines, and since 2019 after the planned 96th season was cancelled because of the pandemic. Only the seniors' tournament for college students shall be held; the juniors' tournament for senior high school students last held in 2019 was still not held. The Letran Knights won all games to become champions undefeated, defeating the Mapua Cardinals in the finals. Rhenz Abando was named season MVP. Tournament format The season will be held with five gamedays a week calendar, with two games being played in each gameday. Loreto Carbonell
Loreto "Bonnie" Carbonell (1933 – 23 September 2017) was a Filipino basketball player who competed in the 1956 Summer Olympics. Career Playing career Sometime during his early years, Father Richard Cronin, a Jesuit priest from the Ateneo de Davao University taught Carbonell the behind the back dribble technique. This would help to become a star player of the San Beda College varsity team. In 1956, he scored 48 points in an NCAA single match surpassing the previous scoring record of Carlos Badion of Mapúa. He also played for the YCO Painters of the Manila Industrial and Commercial Athletic Association. National team career Carbonell played for the Philippines men's national basketball team. ''Cholo'' () is a loosely defined Spanish term that has had various meanings. Its origin is a somewhat derogatory term for people of mixed-blood heritage in the Spanish Empire in Latin America and its successor states as part of ''castas'', the informal ranking of society by heritage.
