Area code 231 is a telephone area code in the North American Numbering Plan (NANP) for the northwestern portion of the Lower Peninsula in the U.S. state of Michigan, History Area code 231 was created in June 1999 by an area code split of area code 616, which had served the entire western half of the Lower Peninsula, extending west from the north-south line aligned with the Mackinac Bridge. 231 was carved out of the northern part. It is centered around the western half of the territory generally defined as Northern Michigan. It also includes Muskegon, which is usually counted as part of West Michigan. Harbor Springs is a city and resort community in Emmet County, Michigan. The population was 1,194 in the 2010 census. Harbor Springs is in a sheltered bay on the north shore of the Little Traverse Bay on Lake Michigan. The Little Traverse Lighthouse is a historic lighthouse on the Harbor Point peninsula, which shelters the deepest natural harbor on the Great Lakes. Bois Blanc Township is a civil township of Mackinac County in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2020 census, the population was 63. The township occupies Bois Blanc Island, as well as some smaller outlying islands within Lake Huron. The nearby Round Island is administered by the city of Mackinac Island. The township is served by Bois Blanc Pines School District, which is the smallest school district in terms of enrollment in the state of Michigan and among the nation. Lake City, Michigan
Lake City is a city in and the county seat of Missaukee County in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2010 census, the city population was 836. Lake City is locally known as the " Christmas Tree Capitol" because of the millions of Christmas trees produced annually. History The community's first settler, Daniel Reeder, built his cabin on Muskrat Lake, now Lake Missaukee, in 1868. On January 22, 1872, Reeder was the name of post office open and the last name of its first postmaster, Daniel. The county selected Reeder by a one-vote margin as the county seat in 1873.
