Giovanni Arcimboldi
Giovanni Arcimboldi (died 1488) is called the Cardinal of Novara or the Cardinal of Milan and was an Italian Roman Catholic bishop and cardinal. He served many times as the legate to Perugia and was both a Senator of Milan and ran the archdiocese from 1485-1488. Biography Giovanni Arcimboldi was born in Parma or Milan in 1421 or 1426. He was the son of Nicolò Arcimboldo (''maestro delle Entrate Straordinarie'' of Filippo Maria Visconti) and his wife Orsina Canossa (descendant of the family of Matilda of Tuscany). He was educated at the University of Pavia, receiving a doctorate of both laws in 1458. He also studied letters under Italian Renaissance humanist Francesco Filelfo and later maintained a correspondence with Filelfo. Early in his life, he married Briseide Pietrasanta, and had a daughter, Briseide Arcimboldi. He also later fathered nine illegitimate children. Life Born in Parma, son of Nicolò and Orsina Canossa, he studied law and since young age he was in friendship with Galeazzo Maria Sforza. Giovanni Angelo Arcimboldi (1485–1555) was a Roman Catholic prelate who served as Bishop of Novara (1526–1550) ''(in Latin)'' and Archbishop of Milan (1550–1555). Giuseppe Arcimboldo (; also spelled ''Arcimboldi'') (1526 or 1527 – 11 July 1593) was an Italian painter best known for creating imaginative portrait heads made entirely of objects such as fruits, vegetables, flowers, fish and books. These works form a distinct category from his other productions. He was a conventional court painter of portraits for three Holy Roman Emperors in Vienna and Prague, also producing religious subjects and, among other things, a series of coloured drawings of exotic animals in the imperial menagerie. He specialized in grotesque symbolical compositions of fruits, animals, landscapes, or various inanimate objects arranged into human forms. The still-life portraits were clearly partly intended as whimsical curiosities to amuse the court, but critics have speculated as to how seriously they engaged with Renaissance Neo-Platonism or other intellectual currents of the day.
