Archive Collection Volume II
''Archive Collection Volume II'' is the second vault release from Anthony Phillips, following '' Archive Collection Volume I'' in 1998. Compiled by Anthony Phillips and Jonathan Dann, it is a 2 CD selection of previously unreleased pieces and variations recorded from 1971 to 1988. It was released on 10 May 2004 on Blueprint Records (UK) and was re-issued in Japan on Arcangelo Records as a limited edition mini-vinyl sleeve in December 2007. According to the liner notes, "Tregenna Afternoons" is a piece Ant invented to teach original Genesis drummer Chris Stewart how to play guitar. The track "''Fantomas'' opening theme" on CD2 features John Silver on drums. He was the second drummer for Genesis and the inspiration for the song "Silver Song". Anthony Phillips
Anthony Edwin Phillips (born 23 December 1951) is an English musician, songwriter, producer and singer who gained prominence as the original lead guitarist of the rock band Genesis, from 1967 to 1970. He left in July 1970 and learned to play more instruments, before he began a solo career. His departure from Genesis on the eve of the group's breakthrough to mainstream popularity has led him to be popularly dubbed "the Pete Best of progressive rock" (though unlike Best, Phillips left voluntarily). Phillips released his first solo album, ''The Geese & the Ghost'', in 1977. He continues to release solo material, including further solo albums, television and film music, collaborations with several artists, and compilation albums of his recordings. Acoustic Music
Acoustic music is music that solely or primarily uses instruments that produce sound through acoustic means, as opposed to electric or electronic means. While all music was once acoustic, the retronym "acoustic music" appeared after the advent of electric instruments, such as the electric guitar, electric violin, electric organ and synthesizer. Acoustic string instrumentations had long been a subset of popular music, particularly in folk. It stood in contrast to various other types of music in various eras, including big band music in the pre-rock era, and electric music in the rock era. Music reviewer Craig Conley suggests, "When music is labeled acoustic, unplugged, or unwired, the assumption seems to be that other types of music are ''cluttered'' by technology and overproduction and therefore aren't as ''pure''." Voiceprint Records
Voiceprint Records was a British independent record label based in England, founded in November 1990 by Rob Ayling. They specialised in re-releasing old material, especially progressive rock, but also had new releases, under the Resurgence and Blueprint labels. The holding company, Zeit Distribution Ltd., went into insolvency in 2010. It was replaced by the phoenix company, Gonzo Multimedia in 2010. The new company has a broader remit, and releases a much wider range of music. Labels Voiceprint operated a number of record labels, including some for a single band or set of related artists. ''Field Day'' is a studio double album by English multi-instrumentalist and composer Anthony Phillips, released in October 2005 by Blueprint Records. Background The project was conceived in September 2001, when Phillips decided to start on a proposed "quickie" instrumental guitar album. This would be his first guitar album since ''Private Parts & Pieces V: Twelve'' released in 1985, and until the early 2000s, his albums contained little fresh material. By this time in his career, Phillips had considered himself "a stranger to the world of guitars", and upon entering a break in producing keyboard-based television music, thought it was the right time to practise his guitar playing. Phillips took each acoustic guitar he had and practised for two or three hours each day, "in a state of great excitement but chronic rustiness". Genesis (band)
Genesis are an English rock band formed at Charterhouse School, Godalming, Surrey, in 1967. The band's most commercially successful line-up consisted of keyboardist Tony Banks, bassist/guitarist Mike Rutherford and drummer/singer Phil Collins. The 1970s line-up, featuring singer Peter Gabriel and guitarist Steve Hackett, was among the pioneers of progressive rock. The group were formed by five Charterhouse pupils, including Banks, Rutherford, Gabriel, and Anthony Phillips, and named by former Charterhouse pupil Jonathan King, who arranged for them to record several singles and their debut album ''From Genesis to Revelation'' in 1968. After splitting from King, the band began touring, signed with Charisma Records and became a progressive rock band on ''Trespass'' (1970). Chris Stewart (author)
Christopher Stewart (born 27 March 1951) is a British author who was the original drummer and a founding member of Genesis. When not writing, he runs a farm, where he lives, near Orgiva in Spain. Background and musical career Stewart was born in Crawley and grew up in Horsham, Sussex. He was a classmate of Tony Banks and Peter Gabriel at Charterhouse in Surrey, and joined them in a school band called the Garden Wall. This was joined by classmates Mike Rutherford and Anthony Phillips to form Anon, which was renamed Genesis in January 1967. Stewart appears on Genesis's first two singles, "The Silent Sun" / "That's Me" and "A Winter's Tale" / "One-Eyed Hound". Although several demos from Stewart's time with the band appear on the ''Genesis Archive 1967-75'' box set, he is not credited with playing on any of them (though one track features drumming that may have been done by Stewart). John Silver (musician)
Jonathan "John" Silver (born 1950) was the second drummer for the English rock band Genesis. He replaced Chris Stewart in the summer of 1968 and appears on their first full-length album, ''From Genesis to Revelation'', and on the ''Genesis Archive 1967-75'' box set. He left the band in August 1969 and was replaced by John Mayhew after leaving to study at Cornell University. John Silver was educated at St Edward's School, Oxford, and Genesis rehearsed at his parents' house in Oxford. Silver lives in London with his wife, Lucy, and children, Leo, Max, and Libby. Silver worked briefly at Thames Television in London in the 1980s. In 1973, Anthony Phillips, Mike Rutherford and Phil Collins recorded a song dedicated to Silver, called "Silver Song". This recording and other versions of the song have been included on albums by Phillips. Mike Rutherford
Michael John Cloete Crawford Rutherford (born 2 October 1950) is an English guitarist, bassist and songwriter, co-founder of the rock band Genesis. Rutherford and keyboardist Tony Banks are the group's two continuous members. Initially serving as Genesis's bass guitarist and backing vocalist, Rutherford also performed most of the band's rhythm guitar parts—frequently on twelve-string guitar—in collaboration with successive Genesis lead guitarists Anthony Phillips and Steve Hackett. Following Hackett's departure from Genesis in 1977, Rutherford assumed the additional role of lead guitarist on the band's studio albums (beginning with '' ...And Then There Were Three...'' in 1978). Andrew McCulloch (drummer)
Andrew McCulloch (born 19 November 1945, Bournemouth) is an English drummer who worked with Fields, Greenslade, Manfred Mann Chapter Three, Anthony Phillips, Peter Banks, the Crazy World of Arthur Brown and King Crimson in the 1970s before becoming a yachtmaster. Biography He spent his childhood in Hiroshima and elsewhere outside the UK. He began playing the drums at the age of 18 after returning to England. Joined Bournemouth's band Shy Limbs. He recorded for the first time in autumn 1968, and 9 May 1969 was his record debut. After drumming for Manfred Mann in early 1970, he became Michael Giles' replacement in King Crimson. Roland TR-808
The Roland TR-808 Rhythm Composer, commonly known as the 808, is a drum machine manufactured by the Roland Corporation between 1980 and 1983. It was one of the first drum machines to allow users to program rhythms instead of using preset patterns. Unlike its nearest competitor at the time, the more expensive Linn LM-1, the 808 generates sounds using analog synthesis rather than by playing samples (prerecorded sounds). Launched when electronic music had yet to become mainstream, the 808 received mixed reviews for its unrealistic drum sounds and was a commercial failure. After building approximately 12,000 units, Roland discontinued the 808 after its semiconductors became impossible to restock. It was succeeded by the TR-909 in 1983.
