Archimantis Monstrosa
''Archimantis monstrosa'' is a species of mantid in the family Mantidae. ''A. monstrosa'', or monster mantis, commonly reaches a length of 90mm or more. It is less common than the often-seen large brown mantis. ''A. monstrosa'' that live near the coast can get quite large and sometimes will attack much larger prey. Identification ''A. monstrosa'' can be distinguished from ''A. latistyla'' in that it only has three spots on the wing covers where ''A. latistyla'' has 4; another feature is the spines on the margin of the thorax . James Wood-Mason
James Wood-Mason (December 1846 – 6 May 1893) was an English zoologist. He was the director of the Indian Museum at Calcutta, after John Anderson. He collected marine animals and lepidoptera, but is best known for his work on two other groups of insects, phasmids (stick insects) and mantises (praying mantises). The genus '' Woodmasonia'' Brunner, 1907, and at least ten species of phasmids, are named after him.Bragg, 2008. Life and career Wood-Mason was born in Gloucestershire, England, where his father was a doctor. He was educated at Charterhouse School and Queen's College, Oxford. He went out to India in 1869 to work in the Indian Museum, Calcutta, which in 2008 still housed his collection of insects. In 1872 he sailed to the Andaman Islands, mostly studying marine animals, but also collecting and later describing two new phasmids, '' Bacillus hispidulus'' and '' Bacillus westwoodii''. ''Archimantis latistyla'',Serville JGA (1839) ''Hist. Ins. Orth.'' 179 commonly known as the large brown mantis (also known as the bunny mantis or Australian ghost hopper mantis) is a species of mantid native to Australia. The large brown mantis has two subspecies, a widespread subspecies and the stick mantis ghost from Bundabergs Turtle Sands. The stick mantis ghosts are not as aggressive as the widespread species but have a defense display used to make the mantis appear larger by flinging its front legs into the air and putting its head down along with its antennae. Large brown mantids are light brown with short winged female and a long winged male.
