Archibald Stuart-Wortley (politician)
Archibald Henry Plantagenet Stuart-Wortley (26 April 1832 – 30 April 1890), was a British Conservative Party politician. Background Stuart-Wortley was the son of the Hon. Charles Stuart-Wortley-Mackenzie, second son of James Stuart-Wortley-Mackenzie, 1st Baron Wharncliffe. His mother was Lady Emmeline, daughter of John Manners, 5th Duke of Rutland. Victoria, Lady Welby, was his sister. Political career Stuart-Wortley sat as Member of Parliament for Honiton alongside Joseph Locke between 1857 and 1859. Personal life He married Lavinia Rebecca Gibbins (d. 1937) on 15 June 1879. Stuart-Wortley died in April 1890, aged 58. Charles Stuart-Wortley-Mackenzie
Charles James Stuart-Wortley (3 June 1802 – 22 May 1844) was a British politician, the second son of James Stuart-Wortley-Mackenzie, 1st Baron Wharncliffe. He was an observer at the French siege of Antwerp in 1832, and wrote an account of the affair. Colonel (United Kingdom), Colonel James Archibald Stuart-Wortley-Mackenzie, 1st Baron Wharncliffe, Her Majesty's Most Honourable Privy Council, PC (6 October 1776 – 19 December 1845) was a British soldier and politician. A grandson of Prime Minister John Stuart, 3rd Earl of Bute, he held office under Sir Robert Peel, 2nd Baronet, Sir Robert Peel as Lord Privy Seal between 1834 and 1835 and as Lord President of the Council between 1841 and 1845. Lady Emmeline Charlotte Elizabeth Stuart-Wortley (née Manners; 1806 – 20 October 1855) was an English poet and writer, best known for her ''Travels in the United States, etc. During 1849 and 1850''. She was editor of ''The Keepsake'' volumes for 1837 and 1840.''The Cambridge Bibliography of English Literature'', 1940, vol. 1, p. 807 She was a daughter of John Manners, 5th Duke of Rutland, and his wife, the former Lady Elizabeth Howard. On 17 February 1831, married Hon. Charles Stuart-Wortley-Mackenzie, a son of James Stuart-Wortley-Mackenzie, 1st Baron Wharncliffe. They had a daughter, Victoria, Lady Welby. After the death of her husband in 1844, she began to travel as a wealthy Victorian widow, along with her daughter, Victoria. In October 1855, she died of dysentery in the area between Antioch and Beirut, while travelling through Ottoman Empire regions following the history of the early Christians. John Manners, 5th Duke Of Rutland
John Henry Manners, 5th Duke of Rutland KG (4 January 177820 January 1857), styled Lord Roos from 1778 until 1779 and Marquess of Granby from 1779 until 1787, was a British landowner as well as an owner and breeder of Thoroughbred racehorses. Background Styled Lord Roos from birth, he was born at Knightsbridge, London, the eldest son of Charles Manners, 4th Duke of Rutland, by Lady Mary Isabella Somerset, daughter of Charles Somerset, 4th Duke of Beaufort. He was the grandson of John Manners, Marquess of Granby, and the brother of Lord Charles Manners and Lord Robert Manners. He became known as the Marquess of Granby when his father succeeded to the dukedom in 1779. In 1787 he himself succeeded to the dukedom on the death of his father. Public life Rutland was Lord Lieutenant of Leicestershire between 1799 and 1857. He was also a prominent owner and breeder of Thoroughbred racehorses. Victoria, Lady Welby (27 April 1837 – 29 March 1912), more correctly Lady Welby-Gregory, was a self-educated British philosopher of language, musician and watercolourist. Life Welby was born to the Hon. Charles Stuart-Wortley-Mackenzie and Lady Emmeline Stuart-Wortley, and christened Victoria Alexandrina Maria Louisa Stuart-Wortley. Following the death of her father in 1844, she travelled widely with her mother, and recorded her travel experiences in her diary. When her mother died on their travels in Syria in 1855, she returned to England to stay with her grandfather, John Manners, the 5th Duke of Rutland, at Belvoir Castle. In 1858 she moved to Frogmore to live with a friend of her mother's – the Duchess of Kent, Princess Victoria of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld, Queen Victoria's mother. Joseph Locke
Joseph Locke FRSA (9 August 1805 – 18 September 1860) was a notable English civil engineer of the nineteenth century, particularly associated with railway projects. Locke ranked alongside Robert Stephenson and Isambard Kingdom Brunel as one of the major pioneers of railway development. Early life and career Locke was born in Attercliffe, Sheffield in Yorkshire, moving to nearby Barnsley when he was five. By the age of 17, Joseph had already served an apprenticeship under William Stobart at Pelaw, on the south bank of the Tyne, and under his own father, William. He was an experienced mining engineer, able to survey, sink shafts, to construct railways, tunnels and stationary engines. Joseph's father had been a manager at Wallbottle colliery on Tyneside when George Stephenson was a fireman there. Sir James Weir Hogg, 1st Baronet (1790 – 27 May 1876) was an Irish-born businessman, lawyer and politician and Chairman of the East India Company. Background and education Hogg was born in Lisburn, County Antrim, Ireland, the eldest son of William Hogg and his wife Mary, née Dickey. Alexander Baillie-Cochrane, 1st Baron Lamington
Alexander Dundas Ross Cochrane-Wishart-Baillie, 1st Baron Lamington (24 November 1816 – 15 February 1890), better known as Alexander Baillie-Cochrane, was a British Conservative politician perhaps best known for his association with Young England in the early 1840s. The son of Admiral of the Fleet Sir Thomas John Cochrane, he succeeded to the Baillie estate at Lamington in 1833. He attended Cambridge University before entering parliament as a member for Bridport in 1841. He later sat for Lanarkshire, Honiton, and finally the Isle of Wight until 1880 when he was made a peer and went to the House of Lords as Baron Lamington, of Lamington in the County of Lanark.
