Archibald E. Spriggs
Archibald Everett Spriggs (December 2, 1866 – July 18, 1921) was an American politician and businessman. Affiliated with the People's Party, he served as the lieutenant governor of Montana from 1897 to 1901. After his political career, he embarked on a business career, mostly in the mining industry in Montana. Early life Spriggs's father, Jabez (1838–1926), came to Wisconsin as a boy from Northamptonshire in England and became a farmer in Kansasville, in the Town of Dover, Racine County, Wisconsin. He and his wife Isabella had two children, Archibald and Harvey (1868–1959), who stayed on the family farm. Archibald Spriggs arrived in Montana in 1888 and taught school in the mining camp of Confederate Gulch for several years. He later became a store clerk in Townsend and then a store manager in nearby Winston. Basin, Montana
Basin is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Jefferson County, Montana, United States. It lies approximately southeast of the Continental Divide in a high narrow canyon along Interstate 15 about halfway between Butte and Helena. Basin Creek flows roughly north to south through Basin and enters the Boulder River on the settlement's south side. The population was 212 at the 2010 census, down from 255 at the 2000 census. Archaeologists have discovered evidence of human habitation from 10,000 years ago at a site near Clancy, northeast of Basin. From about 2000 BCE through the mid-19th century, nomadic tribes hunted bison in the grassy valleys that trend east, away from the Rocky Mountains and into the plains. By the time miners found gold in the streams in and near Basin, most of these tribes of Indians had been forced onto reservations by the U.S. government. Manuel Estrada Cabrera
Manuel José Estrada Cabrera (21 November 1857 – 24 September 1924) was the President of Guatemala from 1898 to 1920. A lawyer with no military background, he was a strong ruler (dictator) who modernised the country's industry and transportation infrastructure, but only via granting concessions to the American-owned United Fruit Company, whose influence on the government was deeply unpopular among the population. Estrada Cabrera used increasingly brutal methods to assert his authority, including armed strike-breaking, and he effectively controlled the general elections. He retained power for 22 years through controlled elections in 1904, 1910, and 1916, and was eventually removed from office when the national assembly declared him mentally incompetent, and he was jailed for corruption.
