John Archdale
John Archdale (5 March 1642 – 4 July 1717) served as British colonial Governor of North Carolina and Governor of South Carolina in 1695 and 1696. He may have also been appointed to serve circa 1683-1686. Archdale was appointed to the position by the Lords Proprietors of Carolina. Biography He first travelled from England to North America in 1664 as an agent of his brother-in-law, Sir Ferdinando Gorges. In 1683 John Archdale went to North Carolina as collector of quitrents. After the Lords Proprietors commissioned him governor of Carolina in August 1694, Archdale appointed Thomas Harvey to act as deputy governor for North Carolina, and set out for Charles Towne. John Archdale replaced Joseph Blake as governor in August 1695; when he sailed for England in October 1696, he named Blake his deputy governor. Governor Archdale never returned to Carolina. Sir Edward Archdale, 1st Baronet
Sir Edward Mervyn Archdale, 1st Baronet, PC (Ire), DL (26 January 1853 – 1 November 1943) was a Northern Irish politician. Archdale was born the son of Nicholas Montgomery Archdale and his wife Adelaide Mary (née Porter) in Rossfad, County Fermanagh. He entered the Royal Navy in 1867. He was promoted Lieutenant in 1875 and retired in 1881. He was appointed High Sheriff of Fermanagh for 1884. In 1898 he was elected Conservative Member of Parliament for North Fermanagh. He resigned in 1903, but regained the seat in 1916. The seat was abolished in 1922. In 1921 he stood for the new Parliament of Northern Ireland and was elected for Fermanagh and Tyrone. He held that seat until 1929, and was then elected for Enniskillen, retiring in 1937. From 1921 to 1925, he served as Minister of Agriculture and Commerce in the Government of Northern Ireland and continued as Minister of Agriculture from 1925 to 1933. North Fermanagh was a UK Parliament constituency in Ireland which returned one Member of Parliament from 1885 to 1922, using the first past the post electoral system. Boundaries and Boundary Changes This county constituency comprised the northern part of County Fermanagh. The seat was defined under the Redistribution of Seats Act 1885 as comprising the baronies of Lurg, Magheraboy, and Tirkenny. Mervyn Edward Archdale
Mervyn Edward Archdale (27 January 1812 – 22 December 1895) (known as Mervyn Edward Archdall until 1875), was an Irish soldier, High Sheriff and MP. He was born the eldest son of Edward Archdall of Riversdale, County Fermanagh, who had been Sheriff of Fermanagh in 1813. He was educated at private schools in England and Brasenose College, Oxford, where he matriculated in 1830 but did not graduate. He joined the 6th (Inniskilling) Dragoons, becoming a cornet in 1832, a lieutenant in 1835 and a captain in 1841. He retired on half pay in 1847. In 1834 was elected the Member of Parliament for Fermanagh following the retirement of his uncle Mervyn Archdall. He was returned unopposed in the following nine elections, sitting until 1874. He was appointed High Sheriff of Fermanagh for 1879. In 1857 he inherited the family seat of Castle Archdale and Trillick in County Tyrone from his uncle William Archdall. William Humphrys Archdale
William Humphrys Archdall (6 June 1813 - 23 June 1899), also known as Archdale, was an Irish Conservative politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1874 to 1885. Archdall was the son of Edward Archdall of Riversdale and Castle Archdale and his wife Matilda Humphrys, daughter of William Humphrys of Ballyhaise Cavan. He was educated at Tamworth and Exeter College, Oxford and in 1835 was admitted to Lincoln's Inn. He was a J.P. and Deputy Lieutenant for Fermanagh and was High Sheriff of Fermanagh in 1845. He was also J.P. for County Tyrone and was High Sheriff of Tyrone in 1861. In 1864 he inherited the Riversdale estate on the death of his father.
