The Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia is the Australian archdiocese of the Greek Orthodox Church, part of the wider communion of Eastern Orthodox Christianity. The archdiocese is a jurisdiction of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople. As of 2015, there were over 120 parishes and eight monasteries in the four diocesan districts of the archdiocese in Australia. Eastern Orthodoxy, also known as Eastern Orthodox Christianity, is one of the three main branches of Chalcedonian Christianity, alongside Catholicism and Protestantism. Like the Pentarchy of the first millennium, the mainstream (or "canonical") Eastern Orthodox Church is organised into autocephalous churches independent from each other. In the 21st century, the number of mainstream autocephalous churches is seventeen; there also exist autocephalous churches unrecognized by those mainstream ones. Stylianos Harkianakis ( el, Στυλιανός Χαρκιανάκης; 29 December 1935 – 25 March 2019) was the Greek Orthodox Archbishop of Australia and Primate of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia. He served as inaugural and permanent Chairman of the Standing Conference of Canonical Orthodox Churches in Australia and Dean of St Andrew's Greek Orthodox Theological College. He was a theologian specialising in ecclesiology and also an award-winning poet. Overview Stylianos Harkianakis was born in Rethymno on the island of Crete, Greece, on 29 December 1935. Archbishop Ezekiel Tsoukalas ( el, Ιεζεκιήλ Τσουκαλάς; 13 May 1913 – 1 July 1987) was a Greek bishop and the first Archbishop of Australia in the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia. Archbishop Ezekiel was an assistant bishop in the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America from 1950 to 1959. He had served as a bishop in Boston and Chicago. He had been assistant director of Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology in Brookline, Massachusetts, in 1943 and became director in 1949. Archbishop of Australia Archbishop Ezekiel was elected the fourth Metropolitan of Australia and New Zealand in February 1959.
