Eohyrax
''Eohyrax'' is an extinct genus of Notoungulate, belonging to the suborder Typotheria. It lived during the Middle Eocene, and its remains were discovered in South America. Description This animal is mostly known from fossils of its dentition, which suggests it was an animal between the size of a racoon and a red fox ; it would have looked like a marmot from comparison with its better known relatives, such as '' Archaeohyrax''. It had very high-crowned (hypsodont) teeth in its cheek region. Classification The genus ''Eohyrax'' was first described in 1901 by Florentino Ameghino, based on fossils found in Late Eocene terrains of Argentina. Ameghino thought the fossils dated from the Late Cretaceous, and this assumption was only corrected much later. The Deseadan ( es, Deseadense) age is a period of geologic time (29.0–21.0 Ma) within the Oligocene epoch of the Paleogene to the Early Miocene epoch of the Neogene, used more specifically within the SALMA classification of South America. ''Pseudhyrax'' is an extinct genus of archaeohyracid notoungulate. It lived from the Late Eocene to the Early Oligocene, of what is now South America. Description This animal was approximately the size of a modern raccoon, and its skull was approximately 13 centimeters long. The length of its body, excluding the tail, was approximately 65–75 centimeters, and it weighed around 7–9 kilograms. ''Pseudhyrax'' had a low and elongated skull, mainly characterized by its dentition. The premolars and molars of ''Pseudhyrax'' were particularly high-crowned (hypsodont). Classification The genus ''Pseudhyrax'' was first described in 1901 by Florentino Ameghino, based on fossil remains found in Argentina in terrains dated from the Late Eocene. ''Punahyrax'' is an extinct genus of placental mammal belonging to the family Archaeohyracidae, within the order Notoungulata, and endemic of South America. Its fossilized remains were discovered in Argentina, and were found in the Geste Formation, near Antofagasta de la Sierra in the Catamarca Province, and in the Pozuelos Formation in the Salta Province. Those sites are considered to represent a fauna dated from the Mustersan, the South American Late Eocene. Notoungulata
Notoungulata is an extinct order of mammalian ungulates that inhabited South America from the early Paleocene to the Holocene, living from approximately 61 million to 11,000 years ago. Notoungulates were morphologically diverse, with forms resembling animals as disparate as rabbits and rhinoceroses. Notoungulata are the largest group of South American native ungulates, with over 150 genera in 14 families having been described, divided into two major subgroupings, Typotheria and Toxodontia. Notoungulates first diversified during the Eocene. Their diversity declined during the Late Neogene, with only the large toxodontids persisting until the end of the Pleistocene.
