Arcangelo (ensemble)
Arcangelo is a UK-based early music ensemble founded by Jonathan Cohen in 2010. It performs and records music from the Baroque, Classical, and early Romantic repertoire, ranging from Monteverdi to Beethoven. It is noted for its approach based on the collaborative tradition of chamber music making. Its cast varies in size, from small instrumental repertoire of 4 musicians to large choral works of 80 such as J. S. Bach's Mass in B Minor. Performances and tours have included appearances at Wigmore Hall, Aldeburgh Festival, Edinburgh Festival, BBC Proms, The Globe's Sam Wanamaker Playhouse, Hampton Court Palace, Tetbury Music Festival, Carnegie Hall, Salzburg Festival, Musikverein Vienna and Berliner Philharmonie. Jonathan Cohen (conductor)
Jonathan Cohen (born 17 November 1977) is an English cellist and conductor. Biography After finishing his studies at Clare College, Cambridge, Cohen began his professional career by establishing himself as a cellist. He performed as guest principal with many of the UK's foremost orchestras and ensembles, both symphonic and period. With this experience he developed a speciality in the field of early music and an interest in period instruments. He was a founder member of the London Haydn Quartet in 2000 and continues to perform chamber music with friends and colleagues. Cohen is Artistic Director and founder of the British early music ensemble Arcangelo, which he founded in 2010 as an outgrowth of his assembling an orchestra for a recording project with Iestyn Davies, whom he had known since university. Iestyn Davies
Iestyn Davies (born 16 September 1979) is a British classical countertenor. Education and background Davies was born in York, England and first studied piano and recorder, mentored in his early years by his father Ioan, the founding cellist of the Fitzwilliam Quartet. From the age of eight he sang as a boy treble in the choir of St John's College, Cambridge. He began singing countertenor in his teens, at Wells Cathedral School. He returned to St John's as a choral scholar, graduating in Archaeology and Anthropology. He gained his DipRAM from, and was later appointed ARAM by, the Royal Academy of Music. In 2004 he won the Audience Prize at the London Handel Singing Competition and in 2010 was named "Young Artist of the Year" by the Royal Philharmonic Society. Porpora
Nicola (or Niccolò) Antonio Porpora (17 August 16863 March 1768) was an Italian composer and teacher of singing of the Baroque era, whose most famous singing students were the castrati Farinelli and Caffarelli. Other students included composers Matteo Capranica and Joseph Haydn. Biography Porpora was born in Naples. He graduated from the music conservatory Poveri di Gesù Cristo of his native city, where the civic opera scene was dominated by Alessandro Scarlatti. Porpora's first opera, ''Agrippina,'' was successfully performed at the Neapolitan court in 1708. His second, ''Berenice'', was performed at Rome. In a long career, he followed these up by many further operas, supported as ''maestro di cappella'' in the households of aristocratic patrons, such as the commander of military forces at Naples, prince Philip of Hesse-Darmstadt, or of the Portuguese ambassador at Rome, for composing operas alone did not yet make a viable career. Archiv Produktion
Archiv Produktion is a classical music record label of German origin. It originated in 1949 as a classical label for the Deutsche Grammophon Gesellschaft (DGG), and in 1958 Archiv was established as a subsidiary of DGG, specialising in recordings of Early and Baroque music. It has since developed a particular focus on "historically informed performance" and the work of artists of the Early music revival movement of the 20th and 21st centuries. The first head of Archiv Produktion, serving in the position from 1948 to 1957, was Fred Hamel, a musicologist who set out the early Archiv Produktion releases according to 12 research periods, from Gregorian Chant to Mannheim and Vienna. Anna Prohaska
Anna Prohaska (born 1983) is an Austrian lyric soprano. She lives in Berlin. Career Anna Prohaska studied in Berlin at the Hanns Eisler Academy of Music. Prohaska made her debut in 2002 at the Komische Oper in Harry Kupfer’s production of Britten’s '' Turn of the Screw''. In 2003 she was selected for the Académie européenne de musique in Aix-en-Provence, and in 2006 for the Internationale Händelakademie Karlsruhe. Tim Mead (born 1981) is an English countertenor. Life and career Tim Mead was born in Chelmsford, Essex and began singing as a treble in the choir of Chelmsford Cathedral. He was educated at King Edward VI Grammar School, Chelmsford and the Junior Department of Trinity College of Music where he studied cello and piano. Alina Rinatovna Ibragimova (russian: link=no, Али́на Рина́товна Ибраги́мова; ba, Алина Ринат ҡыҙы Ибраһимова born 28 September 1985) is a Russian-British violinist.
