''Arcade Smash Hits'' is a video game compilation published by Virgin Games and released in 1992 for the Master System. The game is a compilation of three games in one cartridge. In 1996, Sega released a similar title for the Sega Genesis and Game Gear called '' Arcade Classics'', but with versions of ''Pong'' instead of ''Breakout''. Gameplay The compilation contains three classic arcade games to play: '' Centipede'', '' Breakout'' and ''Missile Command''. They are ported from the Atari 2600 games made in 1982, 1978 and 1981 respectively. However the games were updated to allow one or two players (alternating) and make use of digitized voices. ''Centipede'' is a 1981 fixed shooter arcade game developed and published by Atari, Inc. Designed by Dona Bailey and Ed Logg, it was one of the most commercially successful games from the golden age of arcade video games and one of the first with a significant female player base. The primary objective is to shoot all the segments of a centipede that winds down the playing field. An arcade sequel, ''Millipede'', followed in 1982. ''Centipede'' was ported to Atari's own Atari 2600, Atari 5200, Atari 7800, and Atari 8-bit family. The Master System—renamed and with a redesigned casing from the original Sega Mark III, which had been released in the Japanese market in 1985—is a video game console released by Sega in the North American market in June 1986 to compete with the Nintendo Entertainment System, which had been released in the same market in February 1986 (an earlier test market for NES in New York and California occurred in October 1985). Originally priced at 200, North American distribution rights for the console were acquired by Tonka before Sega re-acquired the rights themselves and released a further streamlined redesign of the console during the launch of the Sega Genesis. ''Mean Machines'' was a multi-format video game magazine published between 1990 and 1992 in the United Kingdom. Origins In the late 1980s '' Computer and Video Games'' (''CVG'') was largely covering the outgoing generation of 8-bit computers like the Commodore 64, ZX Spectrum, Amstrad CPC and newly emerging 16-bit computers (the Atari ST and Commodore Amiga).
