Arbeca
Arbeca is a village in the comarca of Les Garrigues, in the province of Lleida, in Catalonia, Spain. It is the third village of Les Garrigues in number of inhabitants, close to Les Borges Blanques and Juneda. The population is about 2,500 and the village has given its name to arbequina olives, used to produce a highly valued olive oil for human consumption, grown not only in Les Garrigues but also in many places in Spain, such as Andalusia. Garrigues (comarca)
Les Garrigues () is a comarca (county) in Catalonia, Spain. Its capital is Les Borges Blanques. Les Borges Blanques
Les Borges Blanques () is the capital of the comarca of Les Garrigues, in the province of Lleida, Catalonia, Spain. According to the 2014 census, the municipality has a population of 6,088 inhabitants. Geography It lies in the southern sector of the central Catalan depression, near the zone watered by the Urgell canal. The high plateaus are covered by olive groves. Arbequina
Arbequina is a cultivar of olives. The fruit is highly aromatic, small, symmetrical and dark brown, with a rounded apex and a broad peduncular cavity. In Europe, it is mostly grown in Catalonia, Spain, but it is also grown in Aragon and Andalusia, as well as California, Argentina, Chile, Australia and Azerbaijan. It has recently become one of the dominant olive cultivars in the world, largely under highly intensive, "super high-density" plantation. Etymology The name comes from the village of Arbeca in the ''comarca'' of the Les Garrigues, where it was first introduced to Europe from the Ottoman Empire in the 17th century by the Duke of Medinaceli, and it has become one of the most widely planted cultivars in the world.
