Aravella Simotas (born October 9, 1978) is an American politician who represented District 36, covering parts of Western Queens, including Astoria and parts of Long Island City, in the New York State Assembly as a member of the Democratic Party. Education and early life Simotas was born in Rhodesia. She immigrated to the United States from Greece and settled in Astoria with her parents and brother when she was an infant. The New York City Council is the lawmaking body of New York City. It has 51 members from 51 council districts throughout the five boroughs. The council serves as a check against the mayor in a mayor-council government model, the performance of city agencies land use decisions, and legislating on a variety of other issues. It also has sole responsibility for approving the city budget.
