Arado L IIa
The Arado L II was a 1920s German two-seat, high-wing touring monoplane. In 1930, a revised version with folding wings and improved undercarriage, the L IIa first flew, and four examples took part in the Challenge International de Tourisme 1930, starting from Berlin-Tempelhof airport, but none placed, and one crashed early in the race. Arado Flugzeugwerke
Arado Flugzeugwerke was a German aircraft manufacturer, originally established as the Warnemünde factory of the Flugzeugbau Friedrichshafen firm, that produced land-based military aircraft and seaplanes during the First and Second World Wars. History With its parent company, it ceased operations following the First World War, when restrictions on German aviation were created by the Treaty of Versailles. In 1921, the factory was purchased by Heinrich Lübbe, who is said to have assisted Anthony Fokker in the creation of the pioneering ''Stangensteuerung'' synchronization gear system during 1914-15, and re-commenced aircraft construction for export, opening a subsidiary, Ikarus, in Yugoslavia. Walter Rethel, previously of Kondor and Fokker, was appointed head designer. Walter Rethel
Walther Karl Paul Rethel (15 August 1892 – 1977) was a German aircraft designer born in Wesel. Rethel was born to parents Paul Rethel (1855-1933) and Mally Rethel. His father was a Prussian Major General and grandfather was painter Otto Rethel. Rethel was Chief Designer with German Kondor Flugzeugwerke (1912-1919) beginning in 1916 before working for the Dutch company Fokker in 1919 he joined NAVO Nederlandse Automobiel en-Vliegtuig Onderneming (Dutch Motorcar and Aircraft Co.) hired by Jan van der Eijken, where he developed the RK-P4/220 together with Karl Keidel. He designed aircraft such as the Kondor D series prototype fighters (1, 2 and 6), amphibious Fokker B.I and the Fokker F.VII airliner. A monoplane is a fixed-wing aircraft configuration with a single mainplane, in contrast to a biplane or other types of multiplanes, which have multiple planes. A monoplane has inherently the highest efficiency and lowest drag of any wing configuration and is the simplest to build. However, during the early years of flight, these advantages were offset by its greater weight and lower manoeuvrability, making it relatively rare until the 1930s. Challenge International De Tourisme 1930
The International Touring Competition in 1930 (french: Challenge International de Tourisme) was the second FAI international touring aircraft contest, that took place between July 18 and August 8, 1930 in Berlin, Germany. Four Challenges, from 1929 to 1934, were major aviation events in pre-war Europe. Overview Germany organized the contest, because the German pilot Fritz Morzik won the previous contest in 1929. The regulation based upon the FAI rules, but details were worked out by the German Aero Club. The international Sports Committee was headed by the German Gerd von Hoeppner. 98 crews applied, but eventually 60 aircraft entered the Challenge in 1930, from six countries: Germany (30 crews), Poland (12 crews), United Kingdom (7 crews), France (6 crews), Spain (3 crews) and the Swiss (2 crews).
