Arado Ar 81
The Arado Ar 81 was a German prototype dive bomber. Because the Reich Air Ministry decided to purchase the competing Junkers Ju 87, only three prototypes of the Ar 81 were completed. Development In 1934, the Reich Air Ministry or RLM (''Reichsluftfahrtministerium'') initiated two parallel programmes to build new dive bombers for the German air force, to replace the Heinkel He 50. The first, the so-called ''Sofort'' or immediate program, aimed to develop an interim dive bomber, and resulted in the production of the Henschel Hs 123. The second, ''Sturzbomber'' program, aimed to produce a more definitive aircraft. Heinkel He 118
The Heinkel He 118 was a prototype German monoplane dive bomber design that lost out to the Junkers Ju 87 ''Stuka'' in the 1930s, and was never ordered by the ''Luftwaffe''. Design Designed by the Günter brothers, the He 118 followed many of the design notes of the Günter's designs of the era, notably the elliptical wing planform and rounded tail surfaces. It was in many ways an aluminum version of the mixed-construction Heinkel He 70 ''Blitz'', strengthened for dive bombing. It was a conventional cantilever monoplane with an inverted gull wing of elliptical planform mounted midway up the fuselage. It was considerably more streamlined than the Junkers competitor, with retractable landing gear and an internal bomb bay. The Jumo 210 was Junkers Motoren's first production inverted V12 gasoline aircraft engine, first produced in the early 1930s. Depending on the version it produced between 610 and 730 PS and can be considered a counterpart of the Rolls-Royce Kestrel in many ways. Although originally intended to be used in almost all pre-war designs, rapid progress in aircraft design quickly relegated it to the small end of the power scale by the late 1930s. It was Blohm & Voss' entry into the contest to equip the re-forming ''Luftwaffe'' with its first purpose-built dive bomber. The Heinkel He 50 was a German World War II-era dive bomber, originally designed for the Imperial Japanese Navy. Serving in ''Luftwaffe'' prewar dive-bombing units, the He 50 served until almost the end of World War II as a night harassment bomber.
