Arabic Democratic Union Party
The Arab Democratic Union Party ( ar, حزب الاتحاد العربي الديمقراطي - ''Hizb Al-Ittihad Al-'Arabi Al-Dimuqrati'') is a nationalist political party in Syria. It is part of the National Progressive Front of legally licensed parties which support the socialist and Arab nationalist orientation of the government and accept the leadership of the Ba'ath Party. In the 22 April 2007 People's Council of Syria election the party was awarded 1 out of 250 seats in the parliament. Ideology The party is committed to the ideals of Nasserism, the party states its intent as, "Building a society that is governed by social justice and in its ideological approach and its struggle is guided by Nasserism, thought and practice". Nasserism ( ) is an Arab nationalist and Arab socialist political ideology based on the thinking of Gamal Abdel Nasser, one of the two principal leaders of the Egyptian Revolution of 1952, and Egypt's second President. Arab Socialism
Arab socialism ( ar, الإشتِراكيّة العربية, Al-Ishtirākīya Al-‘Arabīya) is a political ideology based on the combination of pan-Arabism and socialism. Arab socialism is distinct from the much broader tradition of socialist thought in the Arab world, which predates Arab socialism by as much as fifty years. The term "Arab socialism" was coined by Michel Aflaq, the principal founder of Ba'athism and the Arab Socialist Ba'ath Party in Syria, in order to distinguish his version of socialist ideology from the international socialist movement. Syrian Parliamentary Election, 2007
Parliamentary elections were held in Syria on 22 April 2007. The number of seats reserved for the parties in the National Progressive Front was increased to 170 from 167, decreasing the seats for independents to 80 from 83. The election was boycotted by the opposition in exile, who described it as a "farce". Pre-election events The number of entrants to the parliamentary election race at the deadline reached 9,770, of whom 2,293 were approved, including 158 women. The entrants competed for 250 seats which are divided among the 14 governorates of Syria as follows: Results According to results released on 26 April 2007, the National Progressive Front won 169 seats, while independents won the other 81 seats. Turnout was 56.12% of the 11.96 million eligible voters, and 30 female candidates were elected, exactly as many as in 2003.
