April 2016 Myanmar Earthquake
A magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck Myanmar north-west of Mandalay on April 13 with a maximum Mercalli intensity of VI (''Strong''). It struck at 8:25 pm local time (13:55 UTC), and was centered in an isolated area. The estimated depth was 134 km. It lasted for around one minute according to Xinhua reporters. There were no reports of major damage or loss of life as a result of the tremor in Myanmar. The tremor was also felt in Bangladesh and India. In India, at least two people died and more than 70 were reported to have been injured. 50 people were injured in Chittagong, Bangladesh, rushing out of Ready Made Garment factories. Some fifty persons suffered injuries in the Bangladeshi capital Dhaka and north eastern city of Sylhet as they fled their homes and other buildings during the earthquake. Moment Magnitude Scale
The moment magnitude scale (MMS; denoted explicitly with or Mw, and generally implied with use of a single M for magnitude) is a measure of an earthquake's magnitude ("size" or strength) based on its seismic moment. It was defined in a 1979 paper by Thomas C. Hanks and Hiroo Kanamori. Similar to the local magnitude scale, local magnitude/Richter scale () defined by Charles Francis Richter in 1935, it uses a logarithmic scale; small earthquakes have approximately the same magnitudes on both scales. Despite the difference, news media often says "Richter scale" when referring to the moment magnitude scale. Pakistan is one of the most seismically active countries in the world, being crossed by several major faults. As a result, earthquakes in Pakistan occur often and are destructive. Geology Pakistan geologically overlaps both the Eurasian and Indian tectonic plates. Balochistan, the Federally Administered Tribal Areas, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Gilgit-Baltistan provinces lie on the southern edge of the Eurasian Plate on the Iranian Plateau. Sindh, Punjab and Azad Jammu & Kashmir provinces lie on the north-western edge of the Indian plate in South Asia. Hence this region is prone to violent earthquakes, as the two tectonic plates collide. The cyclone approached the land over the coast at Sandwip, Hatia, Kutubdia, Sitakundu and Feni. 30 people died when Roanu hit the county, most of them died when the cyclone's storm surge overtopped dams.
