Applegate Peak
Applegate Peak is an summit on the south rim of Crater Lake in Crater Lake National Park, Oregon. It ranks as the fourth-highest peak in the park. Topographic relief is significant as the summit rises 1,950 feet above the lake in 0.37 mile. Rim Drive traverses the eastern base of the peak. Precipitation runoff from the mountain's north slope drains into Crater Lake whereas the south slope drains to Wood River (Oregon), Wood River via Sun and Annie creeks. History Applegate Peak was named in the 1800s for Captain Oliver Cromwell Applegate (1845–1938), an early pioneer of Klamath Falls, Oregon, Klamath Falls. In August 1872, Oliver Applegate, Lord William Maxwell, John Meacham, Chester Sawtelle, and A. Bentley succeeded in placing a boat in Crater Lake and taking the first extended excursion around the lake at which time they named prominent landforms after themselves. Oliver Cromwell Applegate
Captain Oliver Cromwell Applegate (June 11, 1845 – October 11, 1938) was an American politician, newspaper editor, and Indian agent in the U.S. state of Oregon. A member of the Applegate family that helped open the Applegate Trail, he was raised in Southern Oregon where he later was in charge of the Klamath Indian Reservation. He worked as a scout during the Modoc War, was an Indian agent for all of Oregon, and was editor of the Ashland Daily Tidings, ''Ashland Tidings'' and the ''Klamath Republican''. The Wood River is a short river in the Southern Oregon, southern region of the U.S. state of Oregon, and part of the Klamath Basin drainage. Phantom Ship (island)
Phantom Ship is a small island in Crater Lake in the U.S. state of Oregon. It is a natural rock formation pillar which derives its name from its resemblance to a ghost ship, especially in foggy and low-light conditions. General Phantom Ship Island is mainly formed from andesite rock that dates from about 400,000 years ago, partly altered by hydrothermal activity. A caldera ( ) is a large cauldron-like hollow that forms shortly after the emptying of a magma chamber in a volcano eruption. When large volumes of magma are erupted over a short time, structural support for the rock above the magma chamber is gone. The North Pacific High is a semi-permanent, subtropical anticyclone located in the northeastern portion of the Pacific Ocean, located northeast of Hawaii and west of California. It is strongest during the northern hemisphere summer and shifts towards the equator during the winter, when the Aleutian Low becomes more active.
