Appleby East Railway Station
Appleby East railway station is a closed railway station that was situated on the Eden Valley Railway between Kirkby Stephen East and Penrith in Cumberland (now in Cumbria), England. The station was formerly one of two that served the town of Appleby-in-Westmorland, the other being Appleby West station on the Midland Railway's Settle to Carlisle line. The latter station is still open, albeit now simply called Appleby station. History Opened by the Eden Valley Railway, it became part of the London and North Eastern Railway during the Grouping of 1923. Passing to the Eastern Region of British Railways on nationalisation in 1948, it was then closed by the British Transport Commission. Appleby-in-Westmorland
Appleby-in-Westmorland is a market town and civil parish in the Eden District of Cumbria, England, with a population of 3,048 at the 2011 Census. Crossed by the River Eden, Appleby was the county town of the historic county of Westmorland. It was known just as Appleby until 1974–1976, when the council of the successor parish to the borough changed it to retain the name Westmorland, which was abolished as an administrative area under the Local Government Act 1972. Settle–Carlisle Line
The Settle–Carlisle line (also known as the ''Settle and Carlisle'' (S&C)) is a main railway line in northern England. The route, which crosses the remote, scenic regions of the Yorkshire Dales and the North Pennines, runs between Settle Junction, on the Leeds–Morecambe line, and , near the English-Scottish borders. The historic line was constructed in the 1870s and has several notable tunnels and viaducts such as the imposing Ribblehead. The line is managed by Network Rail. Kirkby Thore Railway Station
Kirkby Thore railway station was a railway station situated on the Eden Valley Railway between Penrith and Kirkby Stephen East. It served the village of Kirkby Thore. The station opened to passenger traffic on 9 June 1862, and closed on 7 December 1953. The station was host to camping coach from 1936 to 1939 and may have had a coach visiting in 1934 and 1935. The track has been dismantled and the A66 road now uses the route of the railway at this point. The former A66 route past the station is now a haulage yard. Warcop Railway Station
Warcop railway station was situated on the Eden Valley Railway between Penrith railway station, Penrith and Kirkby Stephen East railway station, Kirkby Stephen East. It served the village of Warcop. The station opened to passenger traffic on 9 June 1862, and closed on 22 January 1962. Freight traffic and the occasional troop special continued to use the line through the station (latterly serving a nearby Army camp) until at least May 1987. The station was host to camping coach from 1935 to 1939 and may have had a coach visiting in 1934 and 1935. In 1995 the Eden Valley Railway Society, now renamed the Eden Valley Railway Trust, was formed with the aim of restoring the line and reintroducing a train service. Passenger trains resumed running from Warcop in 2006 however in May 2007 an army lorry struck the railway bridge near Warcop causing the suspension of passenger services. The British Transport Commission (BTC) was created by Clement Attlee's post-war Labour government as a part of its nationalisation programme, to oversee railways, canals and road freight transport in Great Britain (Northern Ireland had the separate Ulster Transport Authority).
