Apparition De L'église éternelle
''Apparition de l'église éternelle'' (''Apparition of the eternal church'') is a work for organ, written by the French composer Olivier Messiaen in 1932. The piece is in arch form, beginning in pianissimo () and building up to a fortississimo () climax featuring a C major chord, and then receding back to pianissimo. Richly colored chords alternate with open fifths, on top of a throbbing bass which repeats a simple rhythmic pattern. Programmatically, the piece describes the appearance of the eternal church, which then fades away. This imagery has been compared to Dante's description of the Inferno (Dante), inferno. Messiaen described the piece by quoting from the hymn Urbs beata Jerusalem dicta pacis visio, Cœlestis urbs Jerusalem: "Scissors, hammer, suffering, and tests, tailoring and polishing the elected persons, living stones of the spiritual edifice", stating that the throbbing bass depicts the incessant work of construction. Olivier Messiaen
Olivier Eugène Prosper Charles Messiaen (, ; ; 10 December 1908 – 27 April 1992) was a French composer, organist, and ornithology, ornithologist. One of the major composers of the 20th-century classical music, 20th century, he was also an outstanding teacher of composition and musical analysis. Messiaen entered the Conservatoire de Paris at age 11 and studied with Paul Dukas, Maurice Emmanuel, Charles-Marie Widor and Marcel Dupré, among others. He was appointed organist at the Église de la Sainte-Trinité, Paris, in 1931, a post he held for 61 years, until his death. He taught at the Schola Cantorum de Paris during the 1930s. Arch Form
In music, arch form is a sectional structure for a piece of music based on repetition, in reverse order, of all or most musical sections such that the overall form is symmetric, most often around a central movement. The sections need not be repeated verbatim but must at least share thematic material. It creates interest through interplay among "memory, variation, and progression". Urbs beata Jerusalem dicta pacis visio ("Blessed city of Jerusalem, called vision of peace") is the first line of a 7th or 8th-century hymn sung in the Office of the Dedication of a Roman Catholic church. The text describes the prophetic vision of the New Jerusalem from the Bible. It appeared in early Roman Breviaries and the text was adapted in the 17th century. In 1851, the English translation by John Mason Neale gave rise to two popular hymns, " Blessed city, heavenly Salem" and "Christ is made the sure foundation". Pedro Costa (born 30 December 1958) is a Portuguese film director.
