Alfonso Manuel Escalante
Alonso Manuel Escalante (24 December 1906 - June 1967) was a Roman Catholic prelate and missionary, in South America. He was also known as the "Vagabond of God." Overview Escalante was born in Mexico and was ordained as a member of the Maryknoll Missionaries. Escalante served in the US, China, Mexico, Bolivia and Guadalupe. He was instrumental in the foundation of the Missionaries of Guadalupe, which in turn led to the creation of the Intercontinental University. He was ordained as a bishop in the Old Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe. He was then invited, with the consent of Pius XII, to return to Mexico to found, and be rector of, the Mexican Seminary of Missions. The Catholic Church in Bolivia is part of the worldwide Catholic Church, under the spiritual leadership of the Pope in Rome. Catholicism was introduced in the 1530s and the first diocese was established in 1552. Evangelization among the Indians bore much fruit from the mid-18th to early 19th century, resuming again in 1840. The country declared independence from Spain in 1825. Today, Bolivia is a predominantly Catholic country. Although the Church was disestablished as the state religion in early 2009, relations between Church and state are guided by a concordat signed with the Holy See in 1951. Luis Morgan Casey (June 23, 1935 – July 27, 2022) was an American prelate of the Roman Catholic Church bishop who served as an auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of La Paz in Bolivia. He also served as the vicar apostolic to the Catholic mission in the Pando Department in Bolivia. Biography Born in Portageville, Missouri, Casey was ordained a priest by Cardinal Joseph Ritter for the Archdiocese of Saint Louis on April 7, 1962. In 1965, Casey went to Bolivia to serve in an archdiocesan mission at the headwaters of the Amazon River. On November 3, 1983, Casey was appointed titular bishop of ''Mirbiarca'' and auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of La Paz. He was consecrated in La Paz on January 28, 1984 by Archbishop Alfio Rapisarda, the apostolic nuncio to Bolivia. On January 18, 1988, Casey was appointed vicar apostolic of Pando. Thomas Patrick Collins, M.M. (January 13, 1915 – December 7, 1973) was an American-born Catholic missionary and bishop. As a member of the Catholic Foreign Mission Society of America (Maryknoll) he was assigned to missions in Bolivia. He served as the Vicar Apostolic of the Pando from 1961 to 1968. Early life and education Thomas Collins was born in the San Francisco, California and was one of seven children. He was educated at Sacred Heart School and studied for the priesthood at seminaries in Mountain View, California and Venard before being ordained a priest on June 21, 1942. Priesthood Brown spent his entire career in the Maryknoll Misson in Bolivia. He did pastoral work in a mission station from the Mission Center at Riberalta. Maryknoll is a name shared by a number of related Catholic organizations, including the Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers (also known as the Catholic Foreign Mission Society of America or the Maryknoll Society), the Maryknoll Sisters, and the Maryknoll Lay Missioners. The Apostolic Vicariate of El Beni (or Beni for short) ( la, Apostolicus Vicariatus Benensis) is a Latin Church missionary ecclesiastical territory or apostolic vicariate. As an exempt territory, it is not part of any ecclesiastical province. Its cathedra is in the Catedral de la Santísima Trinidad (devoted to the Holy Trinity), in the episcopal see of Trinidad in Bolivia's Amazonian interior. History On 1 December 1917 Pope Benedict XV established as Apostolic Vicariate of El Beni on territory split off from the then Diocese of Santa Cruz de la Sierra (now an archdiocese). It lost territory twice in 1942, when Pope Pius XII created the Apostolic Vicariate of Pando and Apostolic Vicariate of Reyes.
