Apostolic Recording Studio
Apostolic Studios was an American independent recording studio located at 53 East 10th Street in New York City's Greenwich Village. Established in 1967 by John Townley, Apostolic was the first 12-track studio in New York. Artists recording at the studio included Frank Zappa and The Mothers of Invention, Larry Coryell, Allen Ginsberg, and The Fugs. History Townley, who had moved to New York City to study guitar with Reverend Gary Davis, was immersed in the mid-1960s Greenwich Village music community, associating with Peter La Farge, David Crosby, Fred Neil, and Vince Martin, and working with various artists, including Peter Tork, David Blue, and Jay Ungar before becoming a member of The Magicians in 1965. In August 1966 Townley turned 21 and came into an inheritance of $85,000. A recording studio is a specialized facility for sound recording, mixing, and audio production of instrumental or vocal musical performances, spoken words, and other sounds. They range in size from a small in-home project studio large enough to record a single singer-guitarist, to a large building with space for a full orchestra of 100 or more musicians. The Magicians (band)
The Magicians were an American garage rock band formed in New York City, New York, in 1965. The group released four singles during their brief recording career with Columbia Records, with their most well-known song being "An Invitation to Cry". Members Alan Gordon and Garry Bonner later became a successful songwriting duo, and the Magicians' material was assembled on a compilation album in 1999. History The Magicians originated from an interracial rock group called the Tex and the Chex, which assembled a lineup consisting of Alan Gordon (drums), Everett Jacobs (bass guitar), Mike Appel (lead guitar), and Rod Bristow (lead vocals). Gary Kellgren
Gary Kellgren (April 7, 1939 – July 20, 1977) was an American audio engineer and co-founder of The Record Plant recording studios, along with businessman Chris Stone. Career Engineering Kellgren was a successful and well respected audio engineer (and occasional record producer) during the 1960s and 1970s. He began working at Apostolic Studios, Scepter Studios, and Mayfair Studios with musicians including Jimi Hendrix, Frank Zappa, and Wes Farrell. Power Station at BerkleeNYC, formerly known as Avatar Studios (1996–2017) and Power Station, is a recording studio at 441 West 53rd Street between Ninth and Tenth avenues in the Hell's Kitchen neighborhood in Manhattan, New York City. The building contains 5 studio spaces: A, B, C, G, and E, as well as a black box theater. History The building was originally a Consolidated Edison power plant. In 1977, it was rebuilt as a recording studio by producer Tony Bongiovi and his partner Bob Walters. The complex was renamed Avatar Studios (under the Avatar Entertainment Corporation) in May 1996. Anthony C. Bongiovi (born September 7, 1947) is an American record producer and recording engineer. He is the cousin of musician Jon Bon Jovi.
