The Archdiocese of Huambo ( la, Archidioecesis Huambensis) is a Latin Metropolitan archdiocese of the Roman Catholic Church in western Angola. The cathedral see of the archbishop is the Marian Cathedral of the Conception of Our Lady (Sé Catedral de Nossa Senhora da Conceição), in Huambo. By 2013, the archdiocese had approximately 1.5 million Roman Catholics and 75 diocesan priests. History On 9 September 1940, the Diocese of Nova Lisboa was established on assembled territories split off from the Diocese of São Paulo de Loanda and mission sui iuris of Cunene, mainly to serve the growing European population in what was then the colony of Portuguese Angola. A coadjutor bishop (or bishop coadjutor) is a bishop in the Catholic, Anglican, and (historically) Eastern Orthodox churches whose main role is to assist the diocesan bishop in the administration of the diocese. The coadjutor (literally, "co-assister" in Latin) is a bishop himself, although he is also appointed as vicar general. The Diocese of Lamego ( la, Dioecesis Lamacensis) is a Roman Catholic diocese in Portugal. History Lamego became Catholic when the Visigothic king Reccared I converted to Catholicism. According to local tradition, the city of Lamego received the Gospel from either St. James the Greater or St. Paul. Some Portuguese authorities name St. Peter of Rates as the first Bishop of Lamego during the middle of the 1st century, and later the first Bishop of Braga, purportedly appointed by St. James, though this theory is probably a myth, given that it is proven that St. James was celebrating Easter in Jerusalem precisely the same year. A titular bishop in various churches is a bishop who is not in charge of a diocese. By definition, a bishop is an "overseer" of a community of the faithful, so when a priest is ordained a bishop, the tradition of the Catholic, Eastern Orthodox and Oriental Orthodox churches is that he be ordained for a specific place. Américo Henriques (1923—2006) was a Portuguese prelate of the Catholic Church. He served as the second and final Bishop of the Diocese of Nova Lisboa, before its promotion and renaming as the Archdiocese of Huambo. Biography Born on 6 October 1923 in Portugal, Américo Henriques was ordained a priest on 19 July 1947 in the Diocese of Lamego. On 3 July 1966, he was elevated to the prelature as an auxiliary bishop of Lamego. He was consecrated to the episcopacy by Archbishop Maximilien de Furstenberg, who was later elevated to cardinal. He held that position for less than a year before becoming Coadjutor Bishop of the diocese. On 3 February 1966, Henriques was appointed Bishop of the Diocese of Lamego following the retirement of Bishop João da Silva Campos Neves, who had served for more than 20 years. An apostolic prefect or prefect apostolic is a priest who heads what is known as an apostolic prefecture, a 'pre-diocesan' missionary jurisdiction where the Catholic Church is not yet sufficiently developed to have it made a diocese. Although it usually has an (embryonal) see, it is often not called after such city but rather after a natural or administrative (in many cases colonial) geographical area. If a prefecture grows and flourishes, it may be elevated to an apostolic vicariate, headed by a titular bishop, in the hope that with time the region will generate enough Catholics and stability for its Catholic institutions, to warrant being established as a diocese.
