Apostolic Nunciature To Korea
The Apostolic Nunciature to Korea ( la, Nuntiatura Apostolica in Corea, ko, 주한 교황청 대사관) is an ecclesiastical office of the Catholic Church in South Korea. It is a diplomatic post of the Holy See, whose representative is called the Apostolic Nuncio with the rank of an ambassador. The nuncio resides in Seoul. The Holy See consistently refers to Korea when making appointments, never South Korea or North Korea. The Holy See has no relationship with the government of North Korea; in 2018, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un's invitation to Pope Francis to visit North Korea was relayed through South Korean President Moon Jae-in. Luciano Angeloni
Luciano Angeloni (2 December 1917 – 9 May 1996) was an Italian prelate of the Catholic Church who spent his career in the diplomatic service of the Holy See. Biography Luciano Angeloni was born in Imperia, Italy, on 2 December 1917. He was ordained a priest on 18 August 1940. To prepare for a diplomatic career he entered the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy in 1953. On 24 December 1970, Pope Paul VI appointed him a titular archbishop and Apostolic Pro-Nuncio to Malawi and to Zambia. His received his episcopal consecration on 7 February 1971 from Cardinal Paolo Bertoli. On 25 November 1978, Pope John Paul II named him Apostolic Pro-Nuncio to Korea. This is a list of diplomatic missions of the Holy See. Since the fifth century, long before the founding of the Vatican City State in 1929, papal envoys (now known as nuncios) have represented the Holy See to foreign potentates. Additionally, papal representatives known not as nuncios but as apostolic delegates ensure contact between the Holy See and the Catholic Church in countries that do not have diplomatic relations with the Holy See. At present, there is one residential apostolic delegate, for Jerusalem and Palestine, as well as non-residential delegates for four countries (Brunei, Laos, Mauritania, and Somalia) and for the territories and countries without diplomatic relations with the Holy See in three regions (the Arabian Peninsula, the Caribbean, the Pacific Ocean). Catholic Church In North Korea
The Catholic Church in North Korea retains a community of several hundred adherents who practice under the supervision of the state-established Korean Catholic Association (KCA) rather than the Roman Catholic hierarchy. The dioceses of the Church have remained vacant since Christian persecutions in the late 1940s. The most prominent congregation is that of Pyongyang, which meets at Changchung Cathedral. According to a KCA official, two other congregations exist. The state ideology of Juche has largely displaced Catholic faith, and full services are provided only to people with a Catholic family background. Most, if not all, religious formation of Catholics in the country occurs across the Tumen River in China, where North Koreans occasionally cross illegally to meet with family from the South. Osvaldo Padilla
Osvaldo Montecillo Padilla (born 15 August 1942) is a Philippine prelate of the Catholic Church who spent his career in the diplomatic service of the Holy See. He became an archbishop in 1991 and the position of Apostolic Nuncio to several countries before retiring in 2017. Biography He was born on 5 August 1942 in Sogod, Cebu, Philippines. On 17 December 1990, Pope John Paul II named him titular archbishop of Pia and Apostolic Nuncio to Panama. He received his episcopal consecration on 6 January 1991 from John Paul. In 1994, he was appointed Nuncio to Sri Lanka. On 22 August 1998, he was named Nuncio to Nigeria. On 31 July 2003, he was appointed Nuncio to Costa Rica, and on 12 April 2008 Nuncio to Korea. On 26 April 2008, he was assigned in addition the position of Nuncio to Mongolia. He retired on 15 September 2017. In retirement he lives in the Philippines. Emil Paul Tscherrig (born 3 February 1947) is a Swiss prelate of the Catholic Church who has spent his career in the diplomatic service of the Holy See. He became an archbishop in 1996 and has since held assignments as Apostolic Nuncio to several countries, most recently to Italy and San Marino. Giovanni Battista Morandini (born 30 June 1937) is an Italian prelate of the Catholic Church who spent his career in the diplomatic service of the Holy See.
