Apostolic Nunciature To Nicaragua
The Apostolic Nunciature to Nicaragua is an ecclesiastical office of the Catholic Church in Nicaragua. It is a diplomatic post of the Holy See, whose representative is called the Apostolic Nuncio with the rank of an ambassador. The nuncio resides in Managua. The Holy See used a delegate—a member of its diplomatic corps not granted official status by their host country—to represent its interests to church officials, civil society, and the government until it appointed its first Apostolic Nuncio to Nicaragua in 1933. For fifty years the Nuncio held a second appointment as nuncio, usually to Honduras; since April 1986 the Nuncio to Nicaragua has held only that position. In 2021, as relations between the Church and the government of Nicaraguan dictator Daniel Ortega deteriorated, the government abolished the title "dean of the diplomatic corps", traditionally held by the representative of the Holy See. Lorenzo Antonetti (31 July 1922 – 10 April 2013) was a Cardinal in the Catholic Church, who held several positions in the Vatican diplomatic service. Early life and ordination Antonetti was born on 31 July 1922 in Romagnano Sesia, Italy. On 26 May 1945, at the age of 22, Antonetti was ordained priest in Novara, Italy. He did pastoral ministry in diocese of Novara in 1946. Waldemar Stanisław Sommertag (born 6 February 1968) is a Polish prelate of the Catholic Church who works in the diplomatic service of the Holy See. He was made an archbishop in 2018 and served as nuncio to Nicaragua from 2018 to 2022. Biography Sommertag was born on 6 February 1968 in Więcbork. Fortunatus Nwachukwu (born 10 May 1960) is a Nigerian prelate of the Catholic Church who represents the Holy See at several international organizations in Geneva. He has worked in the diplomatic service of the Holy See since 1994. He has been an apostolic nuncio with the title of archbishop since 2012. Henryk Józef Nowacki (born 11 August 1946) is a Polish prelate of the Catholic Church who has spent his career in the diplomatic service of the Holy See. Biography Nowacki was born on 11 August 1946 in Gunzenhausen. He was ordained a priest on 31 May 1970 by Jerzy Karol Ablewicz, Bishop of Tarnów. On 8 February 2001, Pope John Paul II appointed him titular archbishop of Blera and Apostolic Nuncio to Slovakia. He received his episcopal consecration from John Paul II on 19 March. Jean-Paul Aimé Gobel (born 14 May 1943) is a French prelate of the Catholic Church who has worked in the diplomatic service of the Holy See. Andrea Cordero Lanza di Montezemolo (27 August 1925 – 19 November 2017) was an Italian prelate of the Catholic church. He worked in the diplomatic service of the Holy See from 1977 until he retired in 2001.
