The Apostolic Administration of Uzbekistan is a Roman Catholic (Latin Church) Apostolic Administration (pre-diocesan jurisdiction; originally an Independent Mission) for the Catholics of Uzbekistan ( West Turkistan, Central Asia). It is exempt, i.e. directly subject to the Holy See (not part of any ecclesiastical province) and entitled to a titular bishop. Its episcopal see is the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, in the national capital Tashkent. The Catholic Church in Uzbekistan is part of the worldwide Catholic Church, under the spiritual leadership of the Pope in Rome. There are approximately 5000 Catholics in the country of 27 million. They are organized under a single Apostolic Administration of Uzbekistan (missionary pre-diocesan jurisdiction). The country currently has five parishes and the bishop hopes to open two more. Activities Various religious orders such as the Franciscans and Mother Teresa's Missionaries of Charity have a presence in the country and assist in activities such as caring for the poor, prisoners, and the sick. There are also attempts to introduce the Catholic charity group Caritas, but has so far been unsuccessful. Bishop Jerzy Maculewicz, O.F.M.Conv. (born 30 May 1955) is a Roman Catholic prelate who serves as the first Apostolic Administrator of the Apostolic Administration of Uzbekistan and Titular Bishop of Nara since 1 April 2005. The Catholic Church in Tajikistan is part of the worldwide Catholic Church in Tajikistan ( West Turkistan, Central Asia), under the spiritual leadership of the Pope in Rome. In 2009, the size of the community was estimated at 300 people.
