Apollo Conference
The Apollo Conference is a high school athletic conference represented by 6 schools in the central portion of Illinois. It is a member of the Illinois High School Association. The conference offers championships for girls in basketball, cross country, golf, softball, tennis, track & field, and volleyball. In boys' sports, the Apollo offers championships in baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, tennis, track & field, and wrestling. History The conference was formed in 1970 by charter members Charleston, Newton, Paris and Robinson who left from the Eastern Illinois Conference. In 1972 Decatur Lakeview and Mt. Zion joined the conference after departing the Cenois Conference. Effingham and Taylorville joined in 1981, leaving the Mid-State Conference. Illinois High School Association
The Illinois High School Association (IHSA) is an association that regulates competition of interscholastic sports and some interscholastic activities at the high school level for the state of Illinois. It is a charter member of the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS). The IHSA regulates 14 sports for boys, 15 sports for girls, and eight co-educational non-athletic activities. More than 760 public and private high schools in the state of Illinois are members of the IHSA. The Association's offices are in Bloomington, Illinois. In its over 100 years of existence, the IHSA has been at the center of many controversies. Charleston is a city in, and the county seat of, Coles County, Illinois, United States. The population was 17,286, as of the 2020 census. Richland County Community Unit School District 1
Richland County Community Unit School District 1 is a unified K-12 public school district based in Olney, Illinois. On July 1, 2015, the district name was changed from East Richland Community Unit School District 1 after annexing the territory of West Richland Community Unit School District 2. The resulting school district includes Richland County as well as small parts of Clay, Jasper, Lawrence, and Wayne counties. Newton, IL
Newton is a city in and the county seat of Jasper County, Illinois, United States. The population was 2,849 at the 2010 census, down from 3,069 at the 2000 census. Newton is home to a large coal-fired power plant operated by Illinois Power Generating Co and is close to Newton Lake State Fish and Wildlife Area and Sam Parr State Fish and Wildlife Area. Central State Eight Conference
The Central State Eight Conference is a high school athletic conference in the Illinois High School Association (IHSA), based in Central Illinois. While the name implies that the conference has eight schools, there are actually ten schools currently active, due to other schools changing conference affiliations. The conference was established in time for the 1993-1994 school calendar year. History The impetus of the conference formation can be traced as far back as 1981-1982, originating from the remnants of the defunct Capitol Conference. Taylorville, Illinois
Taylorville is a city in and the county seat of Christian County, Illinois, United States. The population was 10,506 at the 2020 census, making it the county's largest city. History Taylorville was founded on May 24, 1839, and was named after John Taylor, a planning commissioner for the state of Illinois. Taylorville was known (in the early to mid-1990s) to have had a high rate of neuroblastoma, a cancer affecting the adrenal gland and striking children. The local power company Central Illinois Public Service Company was sued and lost for contaminating the groundwater in 1994. Taylorville High School
Taylorville Senior High School is a four-year public high school located in Taylorville, Illinois. The mascot is Tommy Tornado. The school colors are purple and gold. THS is part of TCUSD #3 which also includes a middle-school, three elementary schools located in Taylorville and Mt. Auburn Elementary School and Stonington Elementary. However, at the end of the 2008–2009 academic school year, West Elementary School and Mt. Auburn closed. Mount Zion High School is a public high school located in Mount Zion, Illinois. The school serves students in grades 9 through 12 and is the only high school operated by Mount Zion Community Unit School District #3. Mattoon High School is located in Coles County, Mattoon, Illinois, United States. The school mascot is the Green Wave, which represents the waves of corn in the fields surrounding the community of Mattoon. History On September 20, 2017, at 11:33 am, a 14-year-old male student opened fire in the school cafeteria and was quickly subdued by Angela McQueen, a math and physical education teacher.
