G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs), also known as seven-(pass)-transmembrane domain receptors, 7TM receptors, heptahelical receptors, serpentine receptors, and G protein-linked receptors (GPLR), form a large group of evolutionarily-related proteins that are cell surface receptors that detect molecules outside the cell and activate cellular responses. Coupling with G proteins, they are called seven-transmembrane receptors because they pass through the cell membrane seven times. Apelin
Apelin (also known as APLN) is a peptide that in humans is encoded by the ''APLN'' gene. Apelin is one of two endogenous ligands for the G-protein-coupled APJ receptor that is expressed at the surface of some cell types. It is widely expressed in various organs such as the heart, lung, kidney, liver, adipose tissue, gastrointestinal tract, brain, adrenal glands, endothelium, and human plasma. Discovery Apelin is a peptide hormone that was identified in 1998 by Masahiko Fujino and his colleagues at Gunma University and Takeda Pharmaceutical Company. In 2013, a second peptide hormone named Elabela was found by Bruno Reversade to also act as an endogenous ligand to the APLNR. Biosynthesis The apelin gene encodes a pre-proprotein of 77 amino acids, with a signal peptide in the N-terminal region.
