Apalachin
Apalachin ( ) is a census-designated place within the Town of Owego in Tioga County, New York, United States. The population was 1,131 in the 2010 census. The CDP is named after Apalachin Creek. ''Apalachin'' means "from where the messenger returned" in Lenape. Apalachin is in the southeastern section of the Town of Owego and is west of Binghamton. It is also part of the Binghamton Metropolitan Statistical Area. History The first settler arrived , but the community was not founded until 1836. On November 14, 1957, the heads of the American Mafia held the Apalachin Meeting at the home of Joseph Barbara, an Apalachin resident. The meeting was a conference of mobsters who had gathered to iron out various issues in the underworld. Joseph Barbara (mobster)
Joseph Mario Barbara (; born Giuseppe Maria Barbara, ; August 9, 1905 – June 17, 1959), also known as "Joe the Barber", was an Italian-American mobster who became the boss of the Bufalino crime family. He led the organization from 1949 until 1959, and hosted the abortive Apalachin meeting in 1957. Barbara died on June 17, 1959. Early life Barbara was born on August 9, 1905, in Castellammare del Golfo, Sicily, to Giuseppe Barbara and Angela Galante. He immigrated to the United States in 1921, at the age of 16 and became a naturalized citizen in 1927. He was soon working as a hitman for the Northeastern Pennsylvania crime family. During the 1930s, Barbara was arrested for several murders, including the 1933 murder of rival bootlegger Sam Wichner. Owego is a town in Tioga County, New York, United States. The population was 18,728 at the 2020 census. The name is derived from the Iroquois word ''Ahwaga'', meaning "where the valley widens". Owego is in the southeastern corner of the county, west of Binghamton. The village of Owego is in the western part of the town. History The town was first settled around 1786. The "Original Town of Owego" was created at the time Tioga County was formed in 1791. This original town was reduced by formation of later towns in the county. Riverside Cemetery (Apalachin, New York)
Riverside Cemetery is a historic cemetery located near Apalachin in Tioga County, New York. It was established in 1802, with late-19th century additions and an addition in 1939. Tioga County is a county in the U.S. state of New York. As of the 2020 census, the population was 48,455. Its county seat is Owego. Its name derives from an American Indian word meaning "at the forks", describing a meeting place. Tioga County is part of the Binghamton, NY Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Binghamton Metropolitan Statistical Area, also called Greater Binghamton or the Triple Cities, is a region of southern Upstate New York in the northeastern United States, anchored by the city of Binghamton.
