Antonín Kohout
Antonín Kohout (12 December 1919 – 15 February 2013) was a Czech cellist and founder of the Smetana Quartet. Life Kohout was born in Lubná in 1919. He studied with the cellist Karel Pravoslav Sádlo at Prague Conservatory; in 1941 at the Conservatory he met the violinist Václav Neumann, who invited him to join an amateur quartet. After changes of personnel the quartet, by then known as the Smetana Quartet, first performed professionally on 6 November 1945 at the Prague Municipal Library, with violinists Jaroslav Rybenský and Lubomír Kostecký, Neumann playing viola and Kohout playing cello; they played quartets by Bedřich Smetana and Vítězslav Novák. Wihan Quartet
The Wihan Quartet ( cs, Wihanovo kvarteto) is a Czech string quartet currently in residence at the Trinity College of Music, London. The quartet was founded at the Prague Academy of Musical Arts in 1985 by Leoš Čepický (violin), Jan Schulmeister (violin), Jiří Žigmund (viola) and Aleš Kaspřík (cello). The group's teacher was Antonín Kohout of the Smetana Quartet and it took its name of Hanuš Wihan (1855–1920), cellist and spiritus rector of the Bohemian Quartet. The quartet won the Prague Spring International Music Competition (1988), the chamber music competition at Trapani, Sicily (1990), and the London International String Quartet Competition (1991). Panocha Quartet
The Panocha Quartet ( cs, Panochovo kvarteto) is a Czech string quartet. History The Panocha Quartet was formed at the Prague Conservatory in 1968 from a trio consisting of Jiří Panocha (violin), Jaroslav Hlůže (viola), and Jaroslav Kulhan (cello). At the suggestion of their teacher, Josef Micka, they recruited violinist Pavel Zejfart to make up a quartet. In 1971 Hlůže was replaced on the viola by Miroslav Sehnoutka. In 1975 the ensemble won the Prague International String Quartet Competition and in 1976 they received the Bordeaux Gold Medal. They made their US début in 1975 and their German and Irish débuts the following year. In 1980 they toured Japan with the Smetana Quartet, whose members had been among their teachers. Kocian Quartet
The Kocián Quartet is a Czech classical chamber ensemble. Originally named the New String Quartet, it was founded in 1972 by three members of the Prague Symphony Orchestra (Jan Odstrčil – 2nd violin, Jiří Najnar – viola, Václav Bernášek – cello) with Pravoslav Kohout as 1st violin. In 1975 they were renamed the Kocián Quartet in honor of famous violinist Jaroslav Kocián.
