Antonio De Villaroel
Antonio de Villarroel y Pelaez (1656, Barcelona – 1726, A Coruña) was a Spanish military commander in the service of Philip V until 1710 in the War of the Spanish Succession. After the disgrace of the Duke of Orléans, he switched to the Habsburg cause of Charles VI, keeping his rank. In 1713 he was appointed general commander of the Army of Catalonia. Military career He joined the army at a very young age, and in 1697, he defended Barcelona against a French army. At the beginning of the War of Spanish Succession, he fought with the army of Philip V, but the fall from grace of the Duke of Orléans forced him to Galicia where he joined the Allied anti- Borbón league. He was there appointed a deputy marshal for the Archduke Charles VI. Once in the service of the Habsburgs, he distinguished himself in the Battle of Villaviciosa and in the thankless task of evacuation of Aragon in 1711. Restaino Cantelmo-Stuart
Restaino Cantelmo-Stuart (1651, in Naples – 16 January 1723, in Madrid), 8th Duke of Pópoli, 3rd Prince of Pettorano was a military leader from Naples in the service of Spain, best known for the Siege of Barcelona (1713–14). Life He was the son of Fabrizio Cantelmo-Stuart, 6th Duke of Pópoli, 2nd Prince of Pettorano, and Beatriz Brancia. In 1672, he entered in the Spanish Army as cavalry captain and was Maestre de campo of the ''Tercio Viejo de Infantería Italiana'' during the suppression of the Real Cittadella, Messina revolt (1674–1678). At the outbreak of the War of Spanish Succession, he remained loyal to Philip V of Spain. In the first years of the war, he fought in Naples against supporters of Charles VI, Holy Roman Emperor, Archduke Charles, led by Gaetano Gambacorta, Prince of Macchia. The War of the Spanish Succession was a European great power conflict that took place from 1701 to 1714. The death of childless Charles II of Spain in November 1700 led to a struggle for control of the Spanish Empire between his heirs, Philip of Anjou and Charles of Austria, and their respective supporters, among them Spain, Austria, France, the Dutch Republic, Savoy and Great Britain. ''Victus, the fall of Barcelona,'' is a historical novel by the Catalan anthropologist Albert Sánchez Piñol published by HarperCollins in September 2014. It is based in the fictitious biography of the Lieutenant Colonel Marti Zuviria who, being 98, tells from Vienna his memories as an engineer serving the commander Antoni de Villarroel during the War of the Spanish Succession, especially during the Siege of Barcelona. The book was written originally in Spanish, but was quickly translated into Catalan and many other languages, including English. Since its original publication in October 2012, the book has sold more than 200,000 copies either in Catalan or Spanish, and the rights of translation have been sold for the book to be translated into Russian, German, Dutch, Italian, Portuguese, French, Korean, and Croatian.
