Antonio Lussich
Antonio Dionisio Lussich (March 23, 1848 in Montevideo – June 5, 1928 in Punta del Este) was an Uruguayan sailor, arboricultorist and writer. Family background His father was Filip Lukšić, a Croatian Merchant sailor who arrived in Montevideo, Uruguay in 1840. Writings He was notably the author of ´Los tres gauchos orientales´, depicting rural life in 19th century Uruguay. He was also responsible for other writings of a more maritime theme. Political associations In his youth Lussich fought as a supporter of Timoteo Aparicio, a Blanco leader in the intermittent 19th century Uruguayan Civil War ("Blanco" refers to "Partido Blanco", which is Spanish for "White Party"). Baltasar Brum
Baltasar Brum Rodríguez, GCTE (18 June 1883 – 31 March 1933) was a Uruguayan political figure. He was President of Uruguay from 1919 to 1923. Background His political convictions closely followed those of liberal President José Batlle y Ordóñez, under whom Brum served as Education Minister 1913–1915. He was Interior Minister from 1915 to 1916. Foreign Minister of Uruguay Brum subsequently served as Foreign Minister under the Presidency of Feliciano Viera; in the latter capacity, Brum was noted for promoting good relations with the United States, which had joined World War I against Germany in 1917. Brum's period of office as Foreign Minister proved to be somewhat controversial. The Lussich Arboretum is an arboretum of located in the Maldonado Department of Uruguay near Punta del Este and Punta Ballena. History On 5 October 1896 Antonio Lussich bought a terrain of , which extend from "Arroyo el Potrero" to "Sierra de la Ballena" and from Rio de la Plata to Laguna del Sauce, land which at that time consisted only of sand dunes and stones. The next year ''Antonio Lussich'' started the forestry works which had as objective on one hand, to forest the dry lands in an attempt to stop the high winds that came from the ocean, and on the other, once the forest was established, to encourage birds to inhabit it. In order to do that, ''Antonio Lussich'', thanks to the enterprise of maritime rescue contracts obtained all over the world, could manage to get seeds from numerous continents. Punta Ballena is a small peninsula (''punta'') and a resort (''balneario''), as well as an important tourist attraction on the coast of Río de la Plata in the Maldonado Department of southeastern Uruguay. It comprises an approximately long stripe of beaches and landforms and extends on both sides of Route 10. Claudio Wílliman
Claudio Wílliman Gonzalez (born 10 October 1861 in Montevideo – † 9 February 1934 in Montevideo) was a Uruguayan political figure. Background Claudio Wílliman's parents, José Williman and Antonia González, were immigrants from Galicia, Spain. José Wílliman's parents himself came from Savoy, France, with Alsatian roots. Wílliman was a member of the Uruguayan Colorado Party and was closely identified with the liberal José Batlle y Ordóñez. His grandson José Claudio Wílliman served in the Uruguayan Senate 1985–1990.
