Antonio Helguera
Antonio Helguera (8 November 1965 – 25 June 2021) was a Mexican cartoonist. He studied engraving at La Esmeralda National School of Painting, Sculpture and Engraving. In 1983, he began his career as a political cartoonist in the newspaper '' El Día''. He continued this work at ''La Jornada'' (where his cartoons appeared regularly) and ''Siempre!'', in addition to '' El Chahuistle'' and '' El Chamuco'', magazines of which he was also the co-editor. In 1996 and 2002 he received the Premio Nacional de Periodismo (National Journalism Award). Political cartoons His work mainly consisted of cartoons about both Mexican and international politics. He is thought to have used cartoons as a form of free speech, since it allows for important issues to be disseminated to the public regardless of their socio-economic backgrounds. La Esmeralda or Escuela Nacional de Pintura, Escultura y Grabado (ENPEG) (English: National School of Painting, Sculpture and Printmaking) is a Mexican art school founded in 1927 and located in Mexico City. History The history of the ENPEG started with the foundation of a sculpture and wood carving school in the former La Merced Cloister (Exconvento de la Merced) in the historic center of Mexico City by Guillermo Ruiz in 1927. In the 1930s, the school moved to the alley Callejón de la Esmeralda (now Calle San Fernando), Colonia Guerrero, which gave it the name "La Esmeralda". In 1943, Antonio M. Ruiz became head of the seemingly provisory school. ''La Jornada'' (''The Working Day'') is one of Mexico City's leading daily newspapers. It was established in 1984 by Carlos Payán Velver. The current editor ''(directora general)'' is Carmen Lira Saade. ''La Jornada'' has presence in eight states of the Mexican Republic with local editions in Aguascalientes, Guerrero, Jalisco, Michoacán, Morelos, San Luis Potosí, Puebla and Veracruz ''(La Jornada de Oriente).'' ''Siempre!'' is a news and political magazine published in Mexico. The magazine is published on a weekly basis. By the end of the 1960s the magazine became a significant part of Mexican politics and an important publication for democratization of the country. History and profile ''Siempre!'' was established in 1953. Its founding editor was José Pagés Llergo. The magazine is affiliated with the Popular Socialist Party and has a socialist stance.
