Antonio Arias Bernal
Antonio Arias Bernal, also known as "The Brigadier" (Aguascalientes, May 10, 1913- Mexico City, December 30, 1960) was considered one of the most important Mexican caricaturists and cartoonists of the twentieth century. His illustration work during the early 1940s targets the Axis with scathing interpretations culminating with his ''Album historico la II guerra mundial ilustrada por Arias Bernal'', a series of prints styled as oversized playing cards depicting world leaders and events relating to World War II. Life Bernal was born in the city of Aguascalientes on May 10, 1913 and died on December 30, 1960, in Mexico City. In 1932, he entered the Academy of San Carlos and later began to contribute cartoons to the magazines Vea, El Hogar, México al Día, for the newspaper Excelsior, and for the García Valseca newspaper chain. Academy Of San Carlos
The Academy of San Carlos ( es, Academia de San Carlos) is located at 22 Academia Street in just northeast of the main plaza of Mexico City. It was the first major art academy and the first art museum in the Americas. It was founded in 1781 as the School of Engraving and moved to the Academia Street location about 10 years later. It emphasized classical European training until the early 20th century, when it shifted to a more modern perspective. At this time, it also integrated with the National Autonomous University of Mexico, eventually becoming the Faculty of Arts and Design, which is based in Xochimilco. Currently, only graduate courses of the modern school are given in the original academy building. ''Siempre!'' is a news and political magazine published in Mexico. The magazine is published on a weekly basis. By the end of the 1960s the magazine became a significant part of Mexican politics and an important publication for democratization of the country. History and profile ''Siempre!'' was established in 1953. Its founding editor was José Pagés Llergo. The magazine is affiliated with the Popular Socialist Party and has a socialist stance. The political stance of the magazine has been subject to changes over the years. For instance, it first supported former Cuban president Fidel Castro, but then it began to criticize him. Maria Moors Cabot Prizes
The Maria Moors Cabot Prizes are the oldest international awards in the field of journalism. They are presented each fall by the Trustees of Columbia University to journalists in the Western hemisphere who are viewed as having made a significant contributions to upholding freedom of the press in the Americas and Inter-American understanding. Since 2003, the prize can be awarded to an organization instead of an individual.
