Antonia Machaira
Antonia "Tonia" Machaira ( gr, Αντωνία "Τόνια" Μαχαίρα; born May 21, 1971) is a retired Greek swimmer, who specialized in sprint and middle-distance freestyle events. She represented Greece in two editions of the Olympic Games (1996 and 2000), and later helped the Greeks capture the silver medal in the freestyle relay (3:48.74) at the 2001 Mediterranean Games in Tunis, Tunisia. Machaira attended the Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Illinois, where she majored in nutrition and played for the Southern Illinois Salukis under head coach Rick Walker. While swimming for the Salukis, she posted career bests in the 100-yard freestyle (50.64) and 200-yard freestyle (1:48.31), both of which stood for more than a decade in the school's record books. Freestyle Swimming
Freestyle is a category of swimming competition, defined by the rules of the International Swimming Federation (FINA), in which competitors are subject to a few limited restrictions on their swimming stroke. Freestyle races are the most common of all swimming competitions, with distances beginning with 50 meters (50 yards) and reaching 1500 meters (1650 yards), also known as the mile. The term 'freestyle stroke' is sometimes used as a synonym for 'front crawl', as front crawl is the fastest surface swimming stroke. It is now the most common stroke used in freestyle competitions. Aikaterini "Katia" Sarakatsani ( gr, Αικατερίνη Σαρακατσάνη; born 3 January 1977) is a Greek swimmer, who specialized in breaststroke and individual medley events. She is a three-time Olympian (1996, 2000, and 2004), a former Greek record holder in the breaststroke, and a member of the swimming team for Hawaii Rainbow Warriors at the University of Hawaii, under head coach Vojko Race. Sarakatsani made her first Greek team, as a 19-year-old, at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta. She failed to reach the top 16 final in any of her individual events, finishing twenty-third in the 200 m individual medley (2:19.74), and twenty-fifth in the 400 m individual medley (4:56.32). The LA84 Foundation (known until June 2007 as the Amateur Athletic Foundation of Los Angeles) is a private, nonprofit institution created by the Los Angeles Olympic Organizing Committee to manage Southern California's endowment from the 1984 Olympic Games.
