Antoing Castle
Antoing Castle (french: Château d'Antoing) is one of Belgium's most original and well-known castles, situated in Antoing in Hainaut, Wallonia. It was first mentioned in the 12th century. Although the present structure of the castle dates from the 13th and 15th centuries, it was redesigned in Neo-Gothic style in the 19th century by the French architect Viollet-le-Duc. The castle at Antoing first belonged to the powerful Melun family, then passed in 1634 to the Princes de Ligne by inheritance, who still own it.The same family also owns the Château de Belœil in the same province. Battle Of Fontenoy
The Battle of Fontenoy was a major engagement of the War of the Austrian Succession, fought on 11 May 1745 near Tournai in modern Belgium. A French army of 50,000 under Marshal Saxe defeated a Pragmatic Army of roughly the same size, led by the Duke of Cumberland. At the beginning of 1745, the French were struggling to finance the war but held the initiative in the Austrian Netherlands, which offered the best opportunity for a decisive victory. In late April 1745, Saxe besieged Tournai, whose position on the upper Scheldt made it a vital link in the North European trading network, and thus meant the Allies would have to fight for it. Leaving 22,000 men in front of Tournai, Saxe placed his main force about away in the villages of Antoing, Vezon and Fontenoy, along a naturally strong feature strengthened with defensive works. Calonne, Wallonia
Calonne is a village of Wallonia and a district of the municipality of Antoing, located in the Hainaut Province, province of Hainaut, Belgium. The village is mentioned in written sources in the early 12th century, and became a parish of its own towards the end of the century. The village was directly subordinate to the cathedral chapter of Tournai Cathedral. Stone has been quarried in the village since at least 1349. The current village church dates from 1843 but replaced a far older structure on the same site when it was built. Bruyelle
Bruyelle ( pcd, Briyèle) is a village of Wallonia and a district of the municipality of Antoing, located in the province of Hainaut, Belgium. A settlement has existed here since Roman times. Remnants of destroyed buildings may be testimony that the village was destroyed by Chauci invaders between the years 172 and 179. In the 12th century, the village belonged to Saint Peter's Abbey, Ghent. During World War I World War I (28 July 1914 11 November 1918), often abbreviated as WWI, was one of the deadliest global conflicts in history.
