Placentia is a town located in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador. It consists of the Argentia Industrial Park and amalgamated communities of Townside, Freshwater, Dunville, Southeast, Point Verde and Jerseyside. Colony Of Newfoundland
Newfoundland Colony was an English and, later, British colony established in 1610 on the island of Newfoundland off the Atlantic coast of Canada, in what is now the province of Newfoundland and Labrador. That followed decades of sporadic English settlement on the island, which was at first seasonal, rather than permanent. It was made a Crown colony in 1824 and a Dominion in 1907. Its economy collapsed during the Great Depression of the 1930s, and Newfoundland relinquished its dominion status, effectively becoming once again a colony governed by appointees from the Colonial Office in Whitehall in London. In 1949, the colony voted to join Canada as the Province of Newfoundland. David Basset
David Basset ( fl 1687–1724) was a merchant active in Newfoundland and New England. He was French born Huguenot. Background Little is known of Basset's earlier years other than that he probably resided in Acadia, married and had a family. He was known in Boston as a merchant trading between New England and Newfoundland. Trade included the usual goods from Boston being traded for fish. In 1687, he became embroiled in a dispute with Antoine Parat, Governor of Plaisance ( Placentia), Newfoundland, over transporting two Huguenots to Boston when the governor wanted to deport them to France. His ship was confiscated and he was sent to prison in France. A pardon occurred on conditions of becoming a settler at Port Royal, Acadia. Basset went to Boston for his family and did not return. Basset commanded a ship against the French when William Phips, colonial governor of Massachusetts, sailed for Acadia in April 1690 and captured Port Royal. Louis de Pastour de Costebelle (ca. 1658 – unknown) naval officer served as interim governor of Plaisance (Placentia, Newfoundland and Labrador, Placentia), Colony of Newfoundland, Newfoundland, before the arrival of Jacques-François de Monbeton de Brouillan in 1690.
