Antiquity (journal)
''Antiquity'' is an academic journal dedicated to the subject of archaeology. It publishes six issues a year, covering topics worldwide from all periods. Its current editor is Robert Witcher, Associate Professor of Archaeology at the University of Durham. Since 2015, the journal has been published by Cambridge University Press. ''Antiquity'' was founded by the British archaeologist O. G. S. Crawford in 1927 and originally called ''Antiquity: A Quarterly Review of Archaeology''. The journal is owned by the Antiquity Trust, a registered charity. The current trustees are Graeme Barker, Amy Bogaard, Robin Coningham (chair), Barry Cunliffe, Roberta Gilchrist, Anthony Harding, Carl Heron, Martin Millett, Nicky Milner, Stephanie Moser, and Cameron Petrie. Archaeology
Archaeology or archeology is the scientific study of human activity through the recovery and analysis of material culture. The archaeological record consists of artifacts, architecture, biofacts or ecofacts, sites, and cultural landscapes. Archaeology can be considered both a social science and a branch of the humanities. It is usually considered an independent academic discipline, but may also be classified as part of anthropology (in North America – the four-field approach), history or geography. Archaeologists study human prehistory and history, from the development of the first stone tools at Lomekwi in East Africa 3.3 million years ago up until recent decades. Archaeology is distinct from palaeontology, which is the study of fossil remains. Archaeology is particularly important for learning about prehistoric societies, for which, by definition, there are no written records. Anthony Harding (archaeologist)
Anthony Harding (born 1946) is a British archaeologist specialising in European prehistory. He was a professor at Durham University and the University of Exeter and president of the European Association of Archaeologists between 2003 and 2009. Following his doctoral research on Mycenaean Greece, Harding's work has mainly concerned the European Bronze Age, including major studies of prehistoric warfare and the prehistory of salt. Education and career Harding was born in Bromley, Kent in 1946 and studied Classics and prehistoric archaeology at the University of Cambridge and Charles University in Prague. He received his doctorate from Cambridge in 1973, with a dissertation on Mycenaean Greece supervised by John Coles. He taught at Durham University from 1973 to 2004 and was appointed Professor in 1990. Archaeology Journals
This page contains a list of academic journals covering archaeology, the study of the human past through material remains. Before the advent of the modern journal format, the Society of Antiquaries of London published ''Vetusta Monumenta'', a series of illustrated folios on antiquarian studies which appeared at irregular intervals between 1718 and 1909. Beginning in 1770, papers delivered at the society's meetings were also published in quarto format in ''Archaeologia'' (last published in 2007), and from 1843 in the ''Proceedings of the Society of Antiquaries of London'', which is still published today under the title ''Antiquaries Journal''. Chris Scarre
Christopher John Scarre, FSA is an academic and writer in the fields of archaeology, pre-history and ancient history. He is Professor of Archaeology at the University of Durham and was head of its archaeology department 2010-2013. Early life Scarre studied at the University of Cambridge. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree, that was later promoted to Master of Arts (MA Cantab) degree. He then undertook postgraduate study of landscape change and archaeological sites in western France, culminating in a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree. Academic career Scarre was Deputy Director of the McDonald Institute for Archaeological Research at the University of Cambridge from its foundation in 1990 to 2005. Martin Carver
Martin Oswald Hugh Carver, FSA, Hon FSA Scot, (born 8 July 1941) is Emeritus Professor of Archaeology at the University of York, England, director of the Sutton Hoo Research Project and a leading exponent of new methods in excavation and survey. He specialises in the archaeology of early Medieval Europe. He has an international reputation for his excavations at Sutton Hoo, on behalf of the British Museum and the Society of Antiquaries and at the Pictish monastery at Portmahomack Tarbat, Easter Ross, Scotland. Caroline Malone
Caroline Ann Tuke Malone (born 10 October 1957) is a British academic and archaeologist. She was Professor of Prehistory at Queen's University, Belfast from 2013 and is now emeritus professor. Education and personal life Malone graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in archaeology and anthropology at the University of Cambridge in 1980 (promoted to MA (Cantab)), and was awarded a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in archaeology by Cambridge in 1986. Her doctoral thesis was titled "Exchange systems and style in the central Mediterranean". Christopher Chippindale
Christopher Ralph Chippindale, FSA (born 13 October 1951) is a British archaeologist. He worked at the Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology from 1988 to his retirement in 2013, and was additionally Reader in Archaeology at the University of Cambridge from 2001 to 2013. Early life and education Chippindale was born on 13 October 1951, to Keith and Ruth Chippindale. He was educated at Sedbergh School, a public school in Sedbergh, Yorkshire. He went on to study at St John's College, Cambridge, graduating Bachelor of Arts (BA Hons). He then studied for a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) at Girton College, Cambridge. Glyn Daniel
Glyn Edmund Daniel FBA, FRAI (23 April 1914 – 13 December 1986) was a Welsh scientist and archaeologist who taught at Cambridge University, where he specialised in the European Neolithic period. He was appointed Disney Professor of Archaeology in 1974 and edited the academic journal ''Antiquity'' from 1958 to 1985. In addition to early efforts to popularise archaeological study and antiquity on radio and television, he edited several popular studies of the fields. He also published mysteries under the pseudonym Dilwyn Rees. Stephanie Moser
Stephanie Moser is an archaeology professor and head of the department at the University of Southampton, England. Her work explores the exhibition and reception of the human past. Moser's research examines visual images from antiquity through the lens of modern anthropology. Education Her B.A. was completed in 1989 at La Trobe University, Melbourne. Nicky Milner
Nicola Jane Milner (born 4 September 1973) is a British archaeologist and academic. She is head of the Department of Archaeology at the University of York. Her research focuses on the Mesolithic period, and the transition between the Mesolithic and Neolithic. She has worked at the iconic site of Star Carr in the Vale of Pickering for over 15 years, and has directed excavations at the site since 2004. Martin Millett
Martin John Millett, (born 30 September 1955) is a British archaeologist and academic. From 2001 to 2022, he was the Laurence Professor of Classical Archaeology at the University of Cambridge and a professorial fellow of Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge. Since 2021, he has been president of the Society of Antiquaries of London. Early life Millett was born on 30 September 1955. Roberta Gilchrist
Roberta Lynn Gilchrist, FSA, FBA (born 28 June 1965) is a Canadian-born archaeologist and academic specialising in the medieval period, whose career has been spent in the United Kingdom. She is Professor of Archaeology and Dean of Research at the University of Reading. Early life and education Gilchrist was born on 28 June 1965 in Canada.
