Antiopella Cristata
''Antiopella cristata'', sometimes known by the common name crested aeolis, is a species of nudibranch, a marine gastropod mollusc in the family Janolidae. Taxonomy Previously some authors synonymised ''Antiopella'' with ''Janolus'' and assigned the genus ''Janolus'' to the Janolidae family (see ITIS.gov or AnimalDiversity), others (see Seaslug Forum) to the family of Zephyrinidae, and these were synonymised names of Proctonotidae (see WoRMS). In 2019 an integrated taxonomic study reinstated ''Antiopella'' and ''Janolus'' as separate genera and placed them in the family Janolidae. Description This species is semi-transparent and has an oval-shaped outline. It is cream or light brown in colour, and grows to approximately 7.5 cm in length. The head has oral tentacles that are short. The lateral cerata are numerous, have a smooth surface and an inflated appearance. The central digestive gland lobe is thin and brown in colour and can be seen through each ceras. These gland l ...

Janolus
''Janolus'' is a genus of small to large sea slugs, or more accurately nudibranchs, marine gastropod mollusks, in the family Janolidae. The name ''Janolus'' is derived from the two-headed god Janus, in ancient Roman mythology. Description Adult individuals of ''Janolus'' species can be between 2.5 cm to 8 cm long, depending on the species. They are semi-translucent and the body is covered in short cerata. Distribution ''Janolus'' species are found in many areas world-wide, including Europe, Australia, Japan and Africa. Ecology Habitat This genus of nudibranch is found in shallow and subtidal waters. Feeding habits ''Janolus'' species feed on Bryozoa, moss animals. Predators In California, ''Navanax'' is a known predator of ''Janolus''. ''Navanax'' tracks the slime of ''Janolus'' by using chemoreceptors. When ''Janolus'' is about to be caught, it rolls into a ball, leaving its cerata exposed. Antiopella Longidentata
'' Antiopella longidentata'' (Gosliner, 1981), previously named ''Janolus longidentatus'', the medallion silvertip nudibranch, is a species of nudibranch, or sea slug. It is a marine gastropod mollusc in the family Proctonotidae. Apart from striking differences in the egg ribbons, individuals of this species are externally not distinguishable from the Cape silvertip nudibranch ''Antiopella capensis''. Distribution This species is endemic to the South African coast and is found on both sides of the Cape Peninsula, from the intertidal border to at least 30 m. Description The medallion silvertip nudibranch grows up to 40mm in total length. It is a pale-bodied nudibranch with dark- to tan-coloured cerata with white tips. Its rhinophores are white and rolled. They are separated from one another by an opaque white spherical mass of unknown function called the rhinophoral crest. Ecology This species of nudibranch feeds on a bryozoan, the spiral moss animal, ''Menipea triseriata ''M ...

Genus
Genus ( plural genera ) is a taxonomic rank used in the biological classification of extant taxon, living and fossil organisms as well as Virus classification#ICTV classification, viruses. In the hierarchy of biological classification, genus comes above species and below family (taxonomy), family. In binomial nomenclature, the genus name forms the first part of the binomial species name for each species within the genus. :E.g. ''Panthera leo'' (lion) and ''Panthera onca'' (jaguar) are two species within the genus ''Panthera''. ''Panthera'' is a genus within the family Felidae. The composition of a genus is determined by taxonomy (biology), taxonomists. The standards for genus classification are not strictly codified, so different authorities often produce different classifications for genera. There are some general practices used, however, including the idea that a newly defined genus should fulfill these three criteria to be descriptively useful: # monophyly – all descendants ...

Subtidal
The neritic zone (or sublittoral zone) is the relatively shallow part of the ocean above the drop-off of the continental shelf, approximately in depth. From the point of view of marine biology it forms a relatively stable and well-illuminated environment for marine life, from plankton up to large fish and corals, while physical oceanography sees it as where the oceanic system interacts with the coast. Definition (marine biology), context, extra terminology In marine biology, the neritic zone, also called coastal waters, the coastal ocean or the sublittoral zone, refers to that zone of the ocean where sunlight reaches the ocean floor, that is, where the water is never so deep as to take it out of the photic zone. It extends from the low tide mark to the edge of the continental shelf, with a relatively shallow depth extending to about 200 meters (660 feet). Above the neritic zone lie the intertidal (or eulittoral) and supralittoral zones; below it the continental slope begi ...

Bryozoa
Bryozoa (also known as the Polyzoa, Ectoprocta or commonly as moss animals) are a phylum of simple, aquatic invertebrate animals, nearly all living in sedentary colonies. Typically about long, they have a special feeding structure called a lophophore, a "crown" of tentacles used for filter feeding. Most marine bryozoans live in tropical waters, but a few are found in oceanic trenches and polar waters. The bryozoans are classified as the marine bryozoans (Stenolaemata), freshwater bryozoans (Phylactolaemata), and mostly-marine bryozoans (Gymnolaemata), a few members of which prefer brackish water. 5,869living species are known. At least two genera are solitary (''Aethozooides'' and ''Monobryozoon''); the rest are colonial. The terms Polyzoa and Bryozoa were introduced in 1830 and 1831, respectively. Soon after it was named, another group of animals was discovered whose filtering mechanism looked similar, so it was included in Bryozoa until 1869, when the two groups were no ...
