The late 1950s and early 1960s saw a strong push from the Spanish Government to establish a national nuclear power industry. Almaraz Nuclear Power Plant
Almaraz Nuclear Power Plant is a nuclear power station at Almaraz in Spain and uses the Tagus River, that runs into Portugal, for cooling. It consists of two PWRs of 1011 and 1006 MWe. The Arrocampo reservoir as system to refrigerate the Nuclear Plant The refrigeration of the Almaraz nuclear power plant was the first reason for the construction of the Arrocampo Reservoir in 1976. The water is taken from the Tagus River and covers a U-shaped circuit of 25 km which allows the cooling of the heat generated by the two nuclear reactors of the plant. Spain is one of the countries with the largest wind power capacity installed, with over 27 GW in 2020. History Spain was an early leader in development of wind power, ranking second after Germany by installed capacity until 2006, when it was surpassed by the United States. In November 2009, a wind storm caused wind farms to produce a peak of 53% of total electricity demand (11.546 GW). This was surpassed in November 2011 with a capacity peak of 59% of power demand being generated by wind power. In 2009, the largest producer of wind power in Spain was Iberdrola, with 25.5% of capacity, followed by Acciona with 20.9% and NEO Energia ( EDP Renewables) with 8.3%. Spain, along with other European Union States, has a target of generating 32% of all its energy needs from renewable energy sources by 2030. A previous target of 20% for 2020, with an additional 0.8% available for other EU countries under the cooperation mechanism, was reached and slightly surpassed. In 2021, renewables generated 46.7% of Spain's electricity needs, the largest part of it from wind power (23.3%), followed by hydroelectric (11.4%), solar (9.9%), and other renewables (2.2%). Since 1998 the Nuclear-Free Future Award (NFFA) is an award given to anti-nuclear activists, organizations and communities. The award is intended to promote opposition to uranium mining, nuclear weapons and nuclear power. The NFFA is a project of the Franz Moll Foundation for the Coming Generations and gives out awards in three categories: Resistance ($10,000 prize), Education ($10,000 prize) and Solutions ($10,000 prize). Additional optional categories are Lifetime Achievement and Special Recognition (contemporary work of art). The award ceremonies take place all around the world. Gladys del Estal Ferreño was a ecologist activist from San Sebastián, Gipuzkoa, Spain (Caracas, 1956 - Tudela, Navarre, Tudela, 1979). She was killed by a bullet shot at her by the Guardia Civil (Spain), Guardia Civil during a protest in Tudela, Navarre, against the nuclear station construction program for the Southern Basque Country, Basque Country, and the aircraft firing range of Bardenas Reales, Bardenas. She has since become an important icon of the ecologist movement. Biography Gladys del Estal Ferreño was born in Venezuela to Spanish parents exiled during the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939). Nuclear Power In Spain
Spain has five active nuclear power plants with seven reactors producing 21% of the country's electricity as of 2013. A nuclear power moratorium was enacted by the Socialist government in 1983. For a time the country had a policy of phasing out nuclear power in favor of renewables. It ended in 1997 but no public or private company has been interested in building new nuclear plants. The oldest unit (at José Cabrera nuclear power plant) was shut down at the end of 2006, 40 years after its construction. In December 2012, the Garoña plant was also shut down. In 2011, the government lifted the 40-year limit on all reactors, allowing owners to apply for license extensions in 10-year increments. Jorge Toledo Albiñana (born in Ludwigshafen am Rhein, Germany, on 21 September 1964) is a Spanish diplomat who has served as the European Union ambassador to China since September 2022.
