Anthony Ribera
Anthony "Tony" Ribera (born January 25, 1945) is the former Police chief of the City and County of San Francisco. Early life and education Ribera grew up in San Francisco's Richmond District where he attended George Washington High School and went on to earn a Ph.D in Public Administration from Golden Gate University. He also attended Sacred Heart High School, and served in the U.S. Army Chief of Police As Chief of Police, Ribera was known for his hair-trigger temper and aggressive "my way or the highway" approach which was detested in the Department. Deputy Chief Frank Reed responded to an interview about Ribera's style saying "Yes, we have had very lively and spirited discussions both in our private conferences and in other places, as well. The chief is very hard of hearing in his left ear so everything he says is in a loud tone." Richmond District, San Francisco
The Richmond District is a neighborhood in the northwest corner of San Francisco, California, developed initially in the late 19th century. It is sometimes confused with the city of Richmond, which is northeast of San Francisco. The Richmond is in many ways defined by its relation to the parks; the district is bordered by Golden Gate Park on the south, the Pacific Ocean to the west, and Lincoln Park, Land's End, Mountain Lake Park and the Presidio of San Francisco to the north, bisected by the Presidio Greenbelt. The Richmond has many influences from the Chinese-American culture. One of its three commercial strips, Clement Street in the Inner Richmond segment, is sometimes called the second Chinatown due to the high concentration of Chinese establishments. The 2003 San Francisco mayoral election occurred on November 4, 2003. The incumbent, Willie Brown, was termed out of office and could not seek a third term. The general election included three top candidates including then Supervisor Gavin Newsom and then president of the board of supervisors, Matt Gonzalez and former supervisor Angela Alioto. In 2011, Washington High was ranked by '' Newsweek's'' Jay Mathews Challenge Index as the 497th best high school in the United States.
