Anthony Plowman
Sir John Anthony Plowman (27 December 1905 – 30 August 1993) was a British judge who served as the Vice-Chancellor of the Chancery Division of the High Court between 1974 and 1976. Biography The son of John Tharp Plowman, a solicitor, Plowman was educated at the Highgate School before taking the Law Society examinations, with a view of becoming a solicitor. He then attended Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge, graduating with a First. He was called to the bar by Lincoln's Inn in 1931 and practised at the Chancery bar. During World War II, he joined the Royal Air Force, attaining the rank of Squadron leader. After the War, Plowman returned to the bar, and was made a Queen's Counsel in 1954. He was appointed to the High Court in 1961 and assigned to the Chancery Division, receiving the customary knighthood. He became Vice-Chancellor in 1974, serving until his retirement in 1976. Chancellor Of The High Court
The Chancellor of the High Court is the head of the Chancery Division of the High Court of Justice of England and Wales. This judge and the other two heads of divisions (Family and Queens Bench) sit by virtue of their offices often, as and when their expertise is deemed relevant, in panel in the Court of Appeal. As such this judge ranks equally to the President of the Family Division and the President of the Queen's Bench Division. From 1813 to 1841, the solitary and from 1841 to 1875, the three puisne judge, ordinary judges of the Court of Chancery — rarely a court of first instance until 1855 – were called vice-chancellors. The more senior judges of the same court were the Lord Chancellor and the Master of the Rolls (who were moved fully to the Court of Appeal above in 1881). Chancery Division
The High Court of Justice in London, known properly as His Majesty's High Court of Justice in England, together with the Court of Appeal and the Crown Court, are the Senior Courts of England and Wales. Its name is abbreviated as EWHC (England and Wales High Court) for legal citation purposes. The High Court deals at first instance with all high value and high importance civil law (non-criminal) cases; it also has a supervisory jurisdiction over all subordinate courts and tribunals, with a few statutory exceptions, though there are debates as to whether these exceptions are effective. The High Court consists of three divisions: the King's Bench Division, the Chancery Division and the Family Division. Bencher
A bencher or Master of the Bench is a senior member of an Inn of Court in England and Wales or the Inns of Court in Northern Ireland, or the Honorable Society of King's Inns in Ireland. Benchers hold office for life once elected. A bencher can be elected while still a barrister (usually, but not always, King's Counsel in the UK or Senior Counsel in Ireland), in recognition of the contribution that the barrister has made to the life of the Inn or to the law. Others become benchers as a matter of course when appointed as a High Court judge. The Inn may elect non-members as honorary benchers – for example, distinguished judges and lawyers from other countries, eminent non-lawyers or (in the English Inns) members of the British Royal Family, who become known as "Royal Benchers" once elected.
