Anthony P. Gawronski
Anthony P. Gawronski (March 24, 1900 – January 1972) was an American lawyer and Democratic politician from West Allis, Wisconsin. Gawronski was elected to the Wisconsin State Senate from the 7th District in 1938 and was re-elected in 1942. Political record Gawronski was the Democratic nominee for the 19th Milwaukee County State Assembly seat in 1930. He came in a weak third in a four-way race, trailing Republican Allen Busby and Socialist Robert Buech. In 1932, he was elected as a delegate to the Democratic National Convention from Wisconsin's 4th congressional district, pledged to nominate Franklin D. Roosevelt for President; and served as a Roosevelt presidential elector that fall. He was first elected to the Senate in 1938, polling 12,032 votes to 10,348 for Socialist Frank Metcalfe (running on the Progressive ticket as part of an electoral fusion arrangement) and 9,175 for a Republican named O'Brien. Wisconsin's 4th Congressional District
Wisconsin's 4th congressional district is a congressional district of the United States House of Representatives in Wisconsin, encompassing a part of Milwaukee County and including almost all of the city of Milwaukee (except the slivers of the city in Waukesha and Washington counties), as well as its working-class suburbs of Cudahy, St. Francis, South Milwaukee, and West Milwaukee. Recent redistricting has added the Milwaukee County North Shore communities of Glendale, Shorewood, Whitefish Bay, Fox Point, Bayside, and Brown Deer to the district. It is currently represented by Gwen Moore, a Democrat. In the 21st century, this has been the most Democratic congressional district in Wisconsin. John Kerry won 69% of the vote here in 2004. Electoral fusion is an arrangement where two or more political parties on a ballot list the same candidate, pooling the votes for that candidate. It is distinct from the process of electoral alliances in that the political parties remain separately listed on the ballot. The Wisconsin Progressive Party (1934–1946) was a political party that briefly held a dominant role in Wisconsin politics. History The Party was the brainchild of Philip La Follette and Robert M. Frank Metcalfe
Frank B. Metcalfe (December 26, 1874 – 1946) was a glassblower from Milwaukee, Wisconsin who spent four terms as a Socialist member of the Wisconsin State Assembly and was twice the Socialist nominee for Governor of Wisconsin. Background Metcalfe was born in Streator, Illinois on December 26, 1874. He attended public school until dropping out at the age of thirteen to work as a "helper boy" and later "glass gatherer" for a local bottle factory. He became an apprentice glass bottle blower in Alton, Illinois. After living in Indiana and Missouri, he came to Milwaukee in 1905, to enter the employ of the Northern Glass Works, where he was working when elected to the Assembly. He was active in the union movement and served one year as an executive board member of the Wisconsin State Federation of Labor.
